Enhancement in the mechanical behaviour of a Schwarz Primitive periodic minimal surface lattice structure design

Xiao Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved Schwarz primitive lattice structure was proposed by redefining the original opening diameter with a shape parameter. Experimental results showed that the modified P lattice structure with a small opening diameter had increased Young's modulus, compressive strength, and energy absorption compared to the original P lattice structure.

Compressive performance and energy absorption of additively manufactured metallic hybrid lattice structures

Lijun Xiao et al.

Summary: A hybrid lattice cell configuration combining an octet cell and a rhombic dodecahedron (RD) cell was proposed to achieve superior mechanical performance and energy absorption capacity. Experimental and numerical results demonstrated that the hybrid structure outperforms the individual octet and RD lattice structures in terms of energy absorption, and its performance can be further enhanced by tuning the mesoscopic architectures.

Properties and applications of additively manufactured metallic cellular materials: A review

Anton du Plessis et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing (AM) is a manufacturing method that builds a part directly in its final or near-final geometry by incrementally adding material layer by layer. Metal AM has been widely adopted and matured in the industry. Lattice structures, with complex geometries, have the potential to be fine-tuned for specific applications in terms of mechanical performance, permeability, thermal properties, etc. As metal AM techniques and design capabilities improve, new application possibilities and new products and features are being realized.

Investigation into multiaxial mechanical behaviors of Kelvin and Octet-B polymeric closed-cell foams

Gang Zheng et al.

Summary: This study develops a series of finite element analysis models to investigate the performance of periodic closed-cell foam materials under uniaxial, compression-shear, and arbitrary triaxial compression. The mechanical responses and deformation modes of different densities of Kelvin and Octet-B foams are compared and analyzed. The study also explores the influence of loading angles and compares the deformation patterns under equal biaxial and hydrostatic loading with uniaxial compression. The initial yield surfaces of both foams are plotted and fitted by theoretical yield criteria, with the Miller criterion providing a better description for the Kelvin foam.

Mechanical characterization of additively-manufactured metallic lattice structures with hollow struts under static and dynamic loadings

Lijun Xiao et al.

Summary: Inspired by natural hollow structures, hollow lattice structures were designed and fabricated using 316L stainless steel through selective laser melting process. Experimental and numerical simulations demonstrated that the hollow beam cross-sections contributed to the stable crushing response of the lattice structures, with smooth post-yield behavior. The specific strength and energy absorption of the hollow lattice structures were found to be superior to many solid-strut lattice materials.

Characterisation and modeling of additively-manufactured polymeric hybrid lattice structures for energy absorption

Z. P. Sun et al.

Summary: Lightweight cellular materials and structures are widely used in load-bearing and energy absorption applications due to their favorable mechanical properties. Recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have allowed for tailored architectural geometries in cellular structures. New hybrid lattice designs combining the advantages of octet and bending-dominated structures show stable post-yield stress plateau without significant sacrifice in stiffness and strength. This study suggests further enhancement of energy absorption performance in lattice structures by appropriately tuning their topological architectures.

Summary: This research analyzed the energy absorption characteristics and crashworthiness design of ship fender structures with varying geometric dimensions. The study focused on foam-filled fenders and used non-linear finite element analysis to determine specific energy absorption and maximum crushing force efficiency, aiming to optimize crashworthiness. The optimization results showed that foam-filled double fender (FDF) had the best performance, recommending a change in traditional fender design.

On multiaxial failure behavior of closed-cell aluminum foams under medium strain rates

Erdong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic failure behavior of closed-cell aluminium foams under different strain rates. It reveals that the uniaxial failure strength's hardening is rate-dependent on the foam cell-wall base material at low and medium strain rates. The failure surface in the von Mises mean stress plane significantly expands with increasing strain rates, but is almost independent of loading or strain rates when normalized by the uniaxial failure strength at the corresponding strain rates. The study suggests modified rate-dependent constitutive models for foam materials under quasi-static and dynamic loadings.

Multiscale investigation of the influence of geometrical imperfections, porosity, and size-dependent features on mechanical behavior of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V lattice struts

Atikom Sombatmai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of five different defects on a single strut, with undersizing/oversizing being the primary factor affecting the discrepancy between experiments and numerical predictions. Diameter variation and offset of the cross section were dominant for small struts, while the presence of voids had a negligible impact on elastic and initial yielding responses. Geometrical inaccuracies and varied properties had comparable effects, with the former being more dominant in smaller samples. The sensitivity from the mCT voxel size affected both global behaviors and localization.

Summary: This study investigated the low-velocity impact behavior of honeycomb-core sandwich panels through experimental and numerical analysis, identifying two distinct failure modes.
