An experimental study on low velocity impact performance of bolted composite joints-part 2: Influence of long-term seawater aging

Halil Burak Kaybal et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the low-velocity impact response of bolted fiber-reinforced polymer joints in two scenarios, and evaluates the impact of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) reinforcement of the epoxy matrix. The effects of seawater aging on the impact performance of the joints are also studied, with results showing a decrease in impact resistance after aging, but an improvement when using HNTs reinforced joints. The ToB impact scenario is considered more detrimental than the SoW tests, and a novel damage mechanism is introduced to address the impact of seawater aging.

Effects of pulling speed on structural performance of L-shaped pultruded profiles

Alexander Vedernikov et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the influence of pulling speed on the structural characteristics of pultruded glass fiber/epoxy-vinyl resin composite profiles. The results showed that an increase in pulling speed led to an increase in spring-in angle, affecting the mechanical properties of the profiles. Profiles produced at different pulling speeds exhibited differences in cracking and mechanical characteristics.

The effects of back-up on drilling machinability of filament wound GFRP composite pipes: Mechanical characterization and drilling tests

Sakir Yazman

Summary: The filament winding (FW) method is preferred in manufacturing high-pressure vessels, pressure pipelines, and construction components. Drilling-induced damages negatively affect the mechanical properties of composite pipes during service, highlighting the importance of determining optimum cutting parameters and a suitable back-up material. Using a back-up material in drilling composite pipes reduces delamination, borehole damages, and surface roughness, while also preventing the propagation of interlaminar cracks around the hole.
