Energy absorption and deformation behavior of multilayer aluminum foam structures

Kailun Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the energy absorption properties and deformation behaviors of aluminum foam multilayer structures during quasi-static compression. The results showed that the uniform-density core layer and interlayer plates improved the buffer and energy absorption capacity of the structures under quasi-static compression. The digital image correlation detection method accurately determined the strain field changes of the aluminum foam structure at specific points of the stress-strain curve.

Intralaminar crack propagation of glass fiber reinforced composite laminate

Changfang Zhao et al.

Summary: The intralaminar crack propagation of unidirectional glass fiber reinforced polymer composite (GFRP) laminate has been investigated using experimental and finite element analysis methods. The results showed that intralaminar crack propagation was accompanied by fiber bridging, and multiple cracks occurred without pre-existing cracks. The use of a blended approach combining the progressive damage model and the extended finite element method can provide insights into the micro-macro failure mechanism.

Mechanical properties and energy absorption capabilities of aluminium foam sandwich structure subjected to low-velocity impact

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic behaviors, deformation and damage mechanisms, and energy absorption of aluminium foam sandwich structures subjected to low-velocity impact. Experimental and numerical analyses were conducted to evaluate the influences of face sheet thickness, core height, and density on the performance of energy absorption. The results show that the combination of impact energy and energy absorption indicators play a crucial role in the optimal design of sandwich structures.

On energy-absorbing mechanisms and structural crashworthiness of laterally crushed thin-walled structures filled with aluminum foam and CFRP skeleton

Guohua Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, thin-walled tubes filled with aluminum foam and CFRP skeleton were developed and tested for crashworthiness under quasi-static lateral loading. Results showed that FCFT-1 exhibited superior specific energy absorption compared to individual components, while FCFT-2 had lower energy-absorbing capacity due to axial cracks in the aluminum tube. Numerical simulations revealed that plastic deformation of separated foams played a major role in energy absorption, with increased interaction effects between separated foams and CFRP skeleton contributing to performance improvement. Additionally, parametric studies indicated that energy-absorbing capacity could be slightly improved by adjusting design parameters.

Energy-absorption assessments of perforated CFRP tube induced by inward-splaying trigger with different trigger radius

Yiru Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crushing behaviors of perforated CFRP tubes with different trigger radii based on Inward-Splaying Triggers (IST) in order to improve crashworthiness. It reveals the positive effect and trigger mechanisms of IST on the perforated tubes and demonstrates that perforated tubes with IST have higher total energy absorption than intact tubes. The transition from hole circumferential fracture to progressive crushing achieved by IST leads to more effective energy dissipation, contributing to the improved crashworthiness of the structure.
