Immune responses and immunoprotection in crustaceans with special reference to shrimp

Amod Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Crustacean aquaculture, especially shrimp production, is a profitable sector worldwide. Despite lacking a vertebrate-like adaptive immune system, shrimp have an efficient innate immune system consisting of cellular and humoral components. Signal pathways are initiated by pattern recognition receptors, producing effector molecules to combat pathogens.

High-Resolution Proteomic Profiling Shows Sexual Dimorphism in Zebrafish Heart-Associated Proteins

Hamid Niksirat et al.

Summary: Understanding sexual dimorphism in the cardiovascular system at the molecular level is crucial for improving research outcomes and the development of sex-based drugs. Through protein quantification and enrichment analysis, it was found that female zebrafish hearts exhibit significant abundance differences in certain proteins, potentially helping them cope with the pressures associated with reproductive material. The identified proteins are related to immune response, metabolism, and other functions.

Crayfish hemocytes develop along the granular cell lineage

Fang Li et al.

Summary: Despite the important role of hemocytes in crustacean immunity, the differentiation and maturation process of hemocytes remains unclear. Research challenges the traditional model of separate lineages for granular cells (GCs) and semigranular cells (SGCs), suggesting they may represent different developmental stages. Hemocyte precursors differentiate in the hematopoietic tissue for 3 to 4 days before maturing in circulation over 1 to 3 months, with GCs representing the terminal stage of development. Further analysis suggests the existence of functionally different subpopulations within hemocytes.
