PAH Growth in Flames and Space: Formation of the Phenalenyl Radical

Zachariah D. Levey et al.

Summary: Resonant ionization mass spectrometry with isotopic labeling was used to investigate the formation of phenalenyl radical from acenaphthylene and methane in an electrical discharge. It was found that in this environment, the CH cycloaddition mechanism can convert a five-membered ring to a six-membered ring, leading to the production of larger PAHs. This mechanism can occur along with other PAH formation mechanisms like HACA in flames and the interstellar medium.

Advances in experimental techniques have allowed for the direct observation of gas phase precursors and the transformation into nanoparticles over the past decade. Questions remain regarding the mechanisms leading to nanoparticle formation, with physically stabilised soot inception proposed as a potential middle ground combining physical and chemical routes.

On the radical behavior of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soot formation and oxidation

Andrea Nobili et al.

Summary: Recent evidence supports resonantly-stabilized radicals as key players in the growth of PAHs. Under combustion conditions, odd-C-numbered PAHs lose hydrogen atoms to form resonantly-stabilized radicals, while even-C-numbered PAHs react as open-shell molecules. The kinetic model incorporating these findings helps to interpret experimental data and contribute to existing chemical kinetic mechanisms.

Molecular-growth pathways in premixed flames of benzene and toluene doped with propyne

N. Hansen et al.

Summary: In this study, the molecular-growth pathways in propyne-doped low-pressure premixed flames of benzene and toluene were investigated through a combined experimental and modeling approach. The chemical structures of the flames were determined using flame-sampling molecular-beam mass spectrometry. Reaction path analyses revealed the important pathways for the formation of indene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene. The molecular growth was found to be driven by radical-radical recombination reactions, as well as ring-closure and ring-enlargement reactions, with little contribution from the classical HACA (hydrogen abstraction-acetylene addition) mechanism.

The role of resonance-stabilized radical chain reactions in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon growth: Theoretical calculation and kinetic modeling

Qian Mao et al.

Summary: Resonance-stabilized radical chain (RSRC) reactions have been proposed as alternative pathways for the formation and growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study investigated the growth of indene from a resonance-stabilized cyclopentadienyl radical through a series of RSRC sequences. The addition of acetylene to the above three resonance-stabilized C7H7 isomers forms indene, with benzyl having the highest formation rate constant and cycloheptatrienyl the lowest. The impacts of the investigated reactions on indene formation were explored in counterflow diffusion and laminar premixed flame configurations, with results showing marginal contributions from the RSRC pathways via C2H2 addition to vinylcyclopentadienyl and cycloheptatrienyl radicals.

Summary: This study investigates the comparative reactivity of 1-alkene fuels in the temperature range of 600-1300 K. Results show that longer carbon chain length 1-alkenes exhibit higher fuel reactivity at low temperatures, while at high temperatures the reactivity becomes similar for all fuels except propene. The production of hydroperoxyl radicals is found to be crucial for the auto-ignition of 1-alkenes, with longer carbon chain facilitating their formation and impacting the fuel reactivity.

Effects of C1-C3 hydrocarbon blending on aromatics formation in 1-butene counterflow flames

Martina Baroncelli et al.

Summary: This study presents insights into the chemical mechanisms responsible for the formation of one- and two-ring aromatic species under non-premixed conditions through a combination of experimental and numerical analysis. The experimental dataset was used to trace the formation of aromatic structures and identify the underlying fuel-dependent molecular-weight growth chemistry. Analysis of the formation pathways of aromatic species predicted by established chemical mechanisms was supported by measured relative changes in species concentrations and numerical simulations. The study found that propargyl and allyl radicals play significant roles in benzene formation, with propargyl addition to benzyl radicals identified as the main contribution to naphthalene production. Formation pathways involving sequences of acetylene and methyl addition to aromatic radicals were found to be responsible reactions for trends in phenylacetylene and -C2H substituted naphthalene.
