Recent progress in tannic acid-driven antibacterial/antifouling surface coating strategies

Gnanasekar Sathishkumar et al.

Summary: Medical devices and surgical implants are essential in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, biofouling and microbial colonization on the implant surface remain major concerns. Tannic acid (TA) is a polyphenol that can be used to functionalize medical substrates, inhibiting microbial adhesion and colonization. This review focuses on recent advancements in TA-based bioinspired universal surface coating technologies and their applications in antifouling and antibacterial purposes.

Black Mn-containing layered double hydroxide coated magnesium alloy for osteosarcoma therapy, bacteria killing, and bone regeneration

Dongdong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed a black Mn-containing layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet-modified Mg-based implant with the ability to generate near-infrared optical absorption and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a tumor-specific microenvironment, effectively eliminating tumor cells and tissues and killing bacteria through localized hyperthermia. The enhanced corrosion resistance and synergistic biofunctions of Mn and Mg ions significantly facilitated cell adhesion, spreading, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and bone regeneration.

Drug Release from Thermo-Responsive Polymer Brush Coatings to Control Bacterial Colonization and Biofilm Growth on Titanium Implants

Hongsuh Choi et al.

Summary: Despite decades of biomedical advances, the colonization of implant devices with bacterial biofilms remains a major cause of implant failure. New strategies and materials, such as polymer coatings with triggered antibiotic release, are needed to suppress bacterial colonization at both early and later stages. The use of thermally responsive polymer coatings on titanium implants showed controlled and thermally triggered release of antibiotics, providing enhanced bactericidal effects in initial in vivo tests.

A mussel-bioinspired multi-functional hyperbranched polymeric coating with integrated antibacterial and antifouling activities for implant interface modification

Huilin Xu et al.

Summary: In recent years, infection-associated implant failures caused by bacteria intrusion and biofilm formation have become a severe threat to human health. Functional modification of the implant interface is considered a promising strategy to inhibit bacterial infection after implantation, but faces limitations such as complicated procedures, unitary function, and high cost. This study successfully designed mussel-bioinspired hyperbranched polymeric coatings (TXPDG) via the Michael addition reaction, demonstrating excellent antibacterial and antifouling properties, as well as remarkable biocompatibility on implant surfaces.
