Si diffusion across the liquid/solid interface of capillary driven (Al-Si)-KxAlyFz micro-layers

Yangyang Wu et al.

Summary: Diffusion is an important phenomenon in thermal processing, as it affects joint formation in materials like (Al-Si)-KxAlyFz clad alloys during aluminum (Al-Mn) brazing. The migration of Si influences the amount of liquid metal available and impacts the solid substrate dissolution at the liquid-solid interface. Experimental and theoretical studies have helped quantify the contribution of available liquid metal and understand the impact of solid and liquid diffusion on the joint formation process.

Filling a hole by capillary flow of liquid metal-equilibria and instabilities

Cheng-Nien Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental results, modeling, and analysis of the hole-filling problem using liquid aluminum brazing alloy on aluminum substrate. The capillary driven flow may result in different hole-filling outcomes depending on the size of the hole. There are multiple solutions in some regions of the parameter space, and experimental outcomes may depend on the availability of strong perturbation to dislodge the system from a metastable equilibrium.
