Enhanced antibacterial properties on superhydrophobic micro-nano structured titanium surface

Vignesh K. Manivasagam et al.

Summary: Micro/nano scale surface modifications of titanium based orthopedic and cardiovascular implants have been shown to improve biocompatibility. However, bacterial infection remains a major concern for implant failure. Recent studies have found that superhydrophobic surfaces can prevent protein and bacterial cell adhesion. This study used a thermochemical treatment to modify the properties of the titanium surface and achieved superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic surfaces by modifying with polyethylene glycol and silane, respectively. The modified surfaces significantly reduced bacterial cell adhesion and prevented biofilm formation.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Gully-Structured Surfaces by Femtosecond Laser and Imprinting for High-Efficiency Self-Cleaning Rain Collection

Gan Yuan et al.

Summary: This study uses femtosecond lasers to create micro-nanostructures on aluminum alloy substrates as molds for imprinting on polypropylene materials. The resulting superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit excellent rain collection efficiency, especially in arid areas, with potential for more than 100% improvement compared to flat surfaces.

A versatile interferometric technique for probing the thermophysical properties of complex fluids

Gopal Verma et al.

Summary: We propose a versatile, rapid, and non-contact interferometric technique that can resolve interface dynamics of complex fluids with high precision. This technique allows the measurement of thermophysical properties of nanofluid and biofluid and quantitatively isolates competing forces. Our research provides a general approach for precision measurements of complex nanofluids, biofluids, and optofluidic devices.

Highly Stable and Transparent Slippery Surface on Silica Glass Fabricated by Femtosecond Laser

Jie Liang et al.

Summary: Underwater optical windows are crucial for ocean detection, but are often affected by marine biofouling. A new 3D bionic slippery surface, created using femtosecond laser wet etching, has been developed to combat these challenges and improve surface durability without compromising transparency. This innovative solution shows great potential for wide applications in ocean detection.

Liquid-Infused Slippery Stainless Steel Surface Prepared by Alcohol-Assisted Femtosecond Laser Ablation

Yao Fang et al.

Summary: A universal method for directly constructing porous micro/nanostructures on any kind of materials to achieve LISS has been proposed. By utilizing alcohol-assisted femtosecond laser irradiation, abundant micro/nanohole structures were successfully built on stainless steel surface. The LISS demonstrated slippery properties to various liquids and showed good stability in different harsh environments, with potential applications in droplet manipulation, microfluidics, and antifouling surfaces.

Environmental Life-Cycle Assessment of an Innovative Multifunctional Toilet

Carla Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Innovative toilets such as the WashOne with washlet have better environmental performance compared to conventional systems, even with low use. The highest contribution to environmental impacts comes from the use phase due to electricity consumption. User location analysis shows varying environmental impacts, with Sweden having the lowest impact and potential impact reduction in Germany and the Netherlands when transitioning to the WashOne system.

Investigation on Recycling Dry Toilet Generated Blackwater by Anaerobic Digestion: From Energy Recovery to Sanitation

Siqi Zuo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anaerobic digestion process of dry toilet generated blackwater using a biomethane potential test. The study found that high total ammonium nitrogen levels inhibited anaerobic digestion initially, but the process eventually adapted. The main pathogen, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multiplied in the first 8 days and then stabilized at a higher level.

Summary: This study fabricated single-tier nano and two-tier multiscale topographies on stainless steel surfaces with one-step femtosecond laser processing, and investigated their anti-icing properties. The results showed that the superhydrophobic two-tier multiscale topography significantly delayed the droplet freezing time and surface frost formation.
