A versatile hydrogel platform for oil/water separation, dye adsorption, and wastewater purification

Fangchao Li et al.

Summary: A composite hydrogel was developed using chitosan, polyvinyl alcohol, and carbon black as raw materials, which exhibited both slippery oil-repellency and water-affinity. This hydrogel could efficiently separate oil/water mixtures and effectively absorb dye molecules dissolved in water. Additionally, the hydrogel showed a photothermal effect under sunlight, making it suitable for solar distillation and daily wastewater purification.

One-step zwitterionization and quaternization of thick PDMAEMA layer grafted through subsurface-initiated ATRP for robust antibiofouling and antibacterial coating on PDMS

Xin Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a thick PDMAEMA layer was successfully grafted on PDMS via subsurface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SSI-ATRP), where the self-migration of DMAEMA monomers into PDMS subsurface was shown to be crucial. The thick microscale graft layer exhibited superior performance compared to nanoscale graft layers obtained by conventional methods, and simultaneous zwitterionization and quaternization of the PDMAEMA layer was achieved through a simple one-step process. The results indicated that a high zwitterionization degree and low quaternization degree on the PDMAEMA layer had a well-balanced effect on fouling repellence and bactericidal activity.

A special underoil superhydrophilic (UOSHL) membrane: Growing of copper phosphate (Cu3(PO4)2) nanosheet to achieve self-cleaning and efficient oil-water separation

Sili Ding et al.

Summary: Due to the high surface tension of water, it is usually difficult to obtain underoil superhydrophilic surfaces. However, some sarcocarps like apple and pear possess the special underwater superhydrophilic property. Inspired by this, phosphate was used as a key factor in constructing the underoil superhydrophilic surfaces. In this study, a simple electrochemical method was employed to fabricate a mesh membrane made of cupric phosphate. The membrane exhibited outstanding underoil superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties, as well as self-cleaning and anti-oil-fouling capabilities.

Randomly heterogeneous oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer coatings with reversible wettability transition for multifunctional fabrics and controllable oil?water separation

Huanjie Chi et al.

Summary: A coating with pH-switchable wettability transition between superamphiphobic and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic has been achieved through rational design of oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer heterogeneous chemistry. The coated fabric shows repellency to water and oils, quickly transitioning to superhydrophilic-superoleophobic under acidic conditions and can be restored to superamphiphobic under mild alkaline conditions, with the transition being reversible for multiple cycles. The fabric can effectively separate oil-water mixtures and various immiscible organic solvent mixtures, and also offers other functionalities such as hygroscopicity, anti-static properties, oil-repellency, and anti-oil fouling for improved comfort and self-cleaning.
