Influence of longitudinal-torsional ultrasonic-assisted vibration on micro-hole drilling Ti-6Al-4V

Guofu Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, Longitudinal-Torsional Ultrasonic Assisted Drilling (LTUAD) was used to machine Ti-6Al-4V and compared with Conventional Drilling (CD) to evaluate its feasibility. The experiment results showed that LTUAD can effectively improve chip morphology, reduce thrust force, and minimize burr height around the hole exit.

The interface temperature and its influence on surface integrity in ultrasonic-assisted drilling of CFRP/Ti stacks

Zhenyu Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between drilling temperature characteristics, heat damage, and surface integrity in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)/Titanium Alloy stacks during Ultrasonic Assisted Drilling (UAD) and Conventional Drilling (CD). Results reveal a significant drop in interface temperature in UAD compared to a slight increase in CD, leading to reduced thermal damage and improved drilling performance in UAD. Through these findings, the study identifies ways to mitigate negative temperature effects in drilling processes of CFRP/Ti stacks.

Study on tool wear in longitudinal-torsional composite ultrasonic vibration-assisted drilling of Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Yingjian Tian et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that longitudinal-torsional composite ultrasonic vibration-assisted drilling (LT-UAD) has significant advantages in reducing tool wear during titanium alloy drilling. Analysis of the influence of vibration amplitude, spindle speed, and feed rate has led to the determination of optimal machining parameters. Additionally, a reliable regression model has been established to accurately predict flank wear width under different machining parameters.

A study on strengthening and machining integrated ultrasonic peening drilling of Ti-6Al-4V

Yihang Liu et al.

Summary: A novel ultrasonic peening drilling (UPD) technology that combines strengthening and machining was proposed, aiming to improve fatigue resistance of holes, enhance surface quality, and increase dimensional accuracy in aircraft assembly. Feasibility experiments on Ti-6Al-4V demonstrated significantly smoother machined surfaces, narrower dimensional tolerances, increased surface micro hardness, and deeper subsurface hardening layer depth with UPD compared to conventional drilling (CD), making it a promising method for finish drilling of aircraft fastening holes.

Effect of surface nanocrystallization on fatigue properties of Ti?6Al?4V alloys with bimodal and lamellar structure

Conghui Zhang et al.

Summary: High-energy shot peening was used to create a nanocrystalline surface layer in Ti-6Al-4V alloy with bimodal and lamellar structure. The results showed that the bimodal structure had higher compressive residual stress and fatigue limit compared to the lamellar structure, leading to improved fatigue strength. The synergy effect of surface gradient nanostructure and compressive residual stress played a key role in enhancing the fatigue limit of the alloy.

Summary: This paper experimentally validated a FE model simulating the cold-expansion of rail-end-bolt holes, showing good agreement between predicted strains and those measured with experimental techniques. The results provide confidence in the model's ability to predict effective stresses and develop crack growth models in cold-expanded holes.
