Children with ADHD Have a Greater Lifetime History of Concussion: Results from the ABCD Study

Nathan E. Cook et al.

Summary: This study compared the lifetime history of concussion between children with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), finding that children with ADHD had twice the odds of experiencing a prior concussion. Lower socioeconomic status was associated with lower rates of reported concussion, but not differentially in association with ADHD.

Greater Acute Concussion Symptoms Are Associated With Longer Recovery Times in NCAA Division III Collegiate Athletes

Grant L. Iverson et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between the severity of acute concussion symptoms and the time taken to return to school and sports in NCAA Division III collegiate athletes. The findings show that athletes with a high burden of acute symptoms have a slower return to school and sports, while those with a low burden of symptoms have a faster return.

Preinjury and Postinjury Factors That Predict Sports-Related Concussion and Clinical Recovery Time

Margot Putukian et al.

Summary: Only sport type and concussion history predicted subsequent occurrence of concussion, and none of the RFs or baseline measures predicted clinical recovery. Immediate postinjury assessments, including symptom number and severity, and select clinical measures predicted longer clinical recovery.

Middle School Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Have a Greater Concussion History

Grant L. Iverson et al.

Summary: This study examined the lifetime history of concussions in middle school student athletes with ADHD and found that children with ADHD were more likely to have a history of concussions compared to those without ADHD. Further research is needed to understand the risk of concussions for young athletes with ADHD and the short- and long-term outcomes of concussions in this population.

Adolescents With ADHD Do Not Take Longer to Recover From Concussion

Nathan E. Cook et al.

Summary: The study found that adolescents with ADHD did not require longer recovery time to return to school and sports following a concussion compared to those without ADHD. Medication status and concussion history were also not associated with longer recovery times.

Racial Disparities in Diagnosis of Concussion and Minor Head Trauma and Mechanism of Injury in Pediatric Patients Visiting the Emergency Department

Jessica S. Wallace et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate racial/ethnic differences in the diagnosis and mechanism of injury among children and adolescents visiting the emergency department for concussion and minor head trauma. The results showed that compared to non-Hispanic White pediatric patients, non-Hispanic Black patients were less likely to have an ED visit for concussion/MHT, while the odds of sustaining a concussion/MHT resulting from assault were higher among non-Hispanic Black children/adolescents and children/adolescents of other race/ethnicity.

Immediate Post-concussion and Cognitive Testing: Ceiling Effects, Reliability, and Implications for Interpretation

Charles E. Gaudet et al.

Summary: This study aimed to further examine the psychometric qualities of the computerized neurocognitive test ImPACT and found varying levels of test-retest reliability, with potential ceiling effects suppressing its reliability. The study also identified significant ceiling effects in a select sample, raising concerns about underestimating baseline functioning and the risk of false-negative errors in post-injury testing.
