Operando Identification of the Reversible Skin Layer on Co3O4 as a Three-Dimensional Reaction Zone for Oxygen Evolution

Tim Wiegmann et al.

Summary: Co oxides and oxyhydroxides have been extensively studied as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction. This study focuses on epitaxial spinel-type Co3O4 films and reveals that the average thickness of the skin layer on the Co3O4 surface correlates with the reactivity of the oxygen evolution reaction. Increasing the thickness of the skin layer enhances the reactivity, and there is a proportional relationship between the number of reaction centers in the skin layer and the activity of the oxygen evolution reaction.

Role of Nanoscale Inhomogeneities in Co2FeO4 Catalysts during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Felix Thomas Haase et al.

Summary: In this study, two structurally equal Co2FeO4 spinels with different OER activities were compared. One sample showed a metastable precatalyst state and achieved optimum operation quickly, while the other sample required a higher potential to achieve the same activity. Furthermore, the enhanced OER activity was accompanied by improved corrosion resistance.

The Roles of Composition and Mesostructure of Cobalt-Based Spinel Catalysts in Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Anna Rabe et al.

Summary: This study explores the catalytic properties of cobalt-based spinels by controlling their composition and structure, and investigates their role in chemical water oxidation, electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction, and H2O2 decomposition. It is found that redox-active cations in the spinels enhance the catalytic activity in all reactions, and the effect of a predominant 111 surface termination on the catalyst also depends on the cobalt oxidation state and reaction conditions.

Water-Fed Hydroxide Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer Enabled by a Fluoride-Incorporated Nickel-Iron Oxyhydroxide Oxygen Evolution Electrode

Junwu Xiao et al.

Summary: A new dissolved oxygen and galvanic corrosion method was developed to synthesize vertically aligned fluoride-incorporated nickel-iron oxyhydroxide nanosheet arrays for an efficient self-supported oxygen evolution electrode. When integrated with a hydroxide exchange membrane electrolyzer, the system achieved a high performance of 1020 mA cm(-2) at 1.8 V and demonstrated catalyst stability over >160 hours of continuous operation at 200 mA cm(-2). This work offers a potential pathway for large-scale production of low-cost hydrogen using intermittent renewable energy sources.

Intrinsic Electrocatalytic Activity for Oxygen Evolution of Crystalline 3d-Transition Metal Layered Double Hydroxides

Fabio Dionigi et al.

Summary: The research employed new synthesis strategies to obtain a broad series of crystalline LDH and electrocatalysts, with NiFe LDH showing the highest activity through electrochemical active surface area normalization. Theoretical reactivity analysis revealed that these trends originate from the dual-metal-site nature of the reaction centers, which may be utilized for designing catalysts with improved performance.

Design Strategies for Electrocatalysts from an Electrochemis's Perspective

Julia Linnemann et al.

Summary: Efforts in producing highly active, selective, and long-lived electrocatalysts by design are focused on understanding the relationship between material properties and catalytic performance. Surface characterization tools assess atomic scale information on electrocatalyst materials complexity, while electrochemical methodologies are less researched for this purpose. Complementary insights into electrocatalysis from other electrochemistry subareas may provide design strategies for improving mass transport and managing gas bubble release.
