LaFeO3 meets nitrogen-doped graphene functionalized with ultralow Pt loading in an impactful Z-scheme platform for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Dung Van Dao et al.

Summary: The study established a ternary Z-scheme platform, LaFeO3@NGr-Pt, which exhibited superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance under visible light. It outperformed previous binary Z-scheme species and showed excellent catalytic activity due to enhanced charge carrier transfer, reduced charge recombination, and accelerated overall catalytic reaction facilitated by Pt cocatalyst.

First principles approach to solar energy conversion efficiency of semiconductor heterojunctions

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: We present an approach to determine the efficiency of semiconductors hetero-junctions in solar light absorption and electron-hole pairs generation for photocatalysis and solar cells applications. This approach considers surface, interface, and quantum confinement effects and predicts the performance of the device by calculating the transmittance and reflectivity of the charge carriers.

Nature and Role of Surface Junctions in BiOIO3 Photocatalysts

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: This study found that by forming a junction between the less stable (010) surface termination and the most stable (100) one, the high efficiency of BiOIO3 photocatalysts can be explained. This junction not only provides the correct band alignment, but also matches the energy levels observed in the experiment.

Summary: Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) have played a key role in electrochemical water splitting, and a new kinetic model has been proposed to explain their activity, which differs from that of metal surfaces. SACs may form stable HM(H) intermediates, changing the kinetics of the process.

Structure and Band Alignment of InP Photocatalysts Passivated by TiO2 Thin Films

Luis A. Cipriano et al.

Summary: Composite materials made of low-band-gap semiconductors covered by thin oxide layers are increasingly used in solar cells and photocatalysis, with InP/TiO2 heterojunctions showing high efficiency due to visible light absorption and efficient migration of photogenerated electrons. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong interface chemical bonds make the formation of InP/TiO2 favorable. The system behaves as a type II junction, with the highest efficiency predicted for film thicknesses of 2-3 nm providing a good compromise between favorable band edge alignment and efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons.

Band offset in semiconductor heterojunctions

Giovanni Di Liberto et al.

Summary: Semiconductor heterojunctions are widely used in various solid-state device applications, with a key role being the alignment of band edges of the two units in the junction. This study compares the performances of three widely used approaches for simulating semiconductor heterostructures and discusses the advantages, drawbacks, and overall performances of each method. The results suggest that the ASJ method provides a similar accuracy in estimating band offsets, while neglecting interface effects in the IU method can lead to significant deviations from experimental values.

Summary: Composite materials formed by titania and graphitic C3N4, such as C3N4/TiO2 and C3N4/SrTiO3/TiO2 heterojunctions, have attracted significant interest as efficient photocatalysts. The different behavior of the two heterojunctions can be rationalized based on density functional theory calculations, showing a reversal in the interface dipole and junction nature in the ternary system.
