New charge-transfer complexes of 1,2,5-chalcogenadiazoles with tetrathiafulvalenes

Elena A. Chulanova et al.

Summary: Five new charge-transfer (CT) complexes of structurally varied 1,2,5-chalcogenadiazoles with tetrathiafulvalenes were obtained and characterized. These complexes are weakly bonded by predominantly electrostatic interactions with contributions from dispersion interactions.

Chalcogen Bond versus Halogen Bond: Changing Contributions in Determining the Crystal Packing of Dihalobenzochalcogenadiazoles

Yusuke Ishigaki et al.

Summary: In the crystals of 4,7-dihalobenzo[c][1,2,5]chalcogenadiazoles, the molecules are connected by competing chalcogen bond (ChB) and halogen bond (HaB). The relative contributions of ChB and HaB in determining the crystal packing can change depending on the type of chalcogen and halogen. This observation may be useful for designing new supramolecular synthons for crystal engineering.

Te•••N secondary-bonding interactions in tellurium crystals: Supramolecular aggregation patterns and a comparison with their lighter congeners

Edward R. T. Tiekink

Summary: Supramolecular aggregation patterns featuring Te center dot center dot center dot N secondary-bonding interactions have been identified in the crystals of tellurium(II) and tellurium(IV) compounds through a survey of the Cambridge Structural Database. Most examples are one-dimensional architectures, with some zero-dimensional aggregates and a fraction of aggregates featuring tellurium forming two interactions. Certain classes of molecules have a high propensity to form Te center dot center dot center dot N interactions. Compared to Se center dot center dot center dot N interactions, Te center dot center dot center dot N interactions are more likely to form, have shorter Te center dot center dot center dot N distances, and tend to form higher-dimensional aggregates.

Thermochemical electronegativities of the elements

Christian Tantardini et al.

Summary: Electronegativity is a key property of the elements that plays an important role in structural chemistry and solid state chemistry and physics. The widely used thermochemical Pauling scale has drawbacks, leading the authors to propose a new thermochemical scale based on experimental dissociation energies that provides dimensionless values for electronegativity. This new scale corrects the flaws in the Pauling scale and improves the description of chemical bonding and thermochemistry.
