Oxygen Limitation Accelerates Regeneration of Active Sites on a MnO2 Surface: Promoting Transformation of Organic Matter and Carbon Preservation

Zhiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the interactions between Birnessite and fulvic acid under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The results revealed that oxygen limitation was more conducive to the oxidative transformation of fulvic acid by Birnessite, and also promoted the regeneration of active sites. In addition, a part of organic carbon was preserved by forming MnCO3.

Variations in nitrogen removal rates and microbial communities over sediment depth in Daya Bay, China

Jiapeng Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure and function of denitrifiers and anammox bacteria in coastal sediment cores collected from Daya Bay in winter and summer, revealing depth-related variations in their activities and abundances. While denitrifiers showed higher activities and abundances in surface sediments, anammox bacteria became more dominant in subsurface sediments. The availability of electronic acceptors strongly influenced nitrogen loss activities in subsurface sediments, highlighting their role as a sink for buried nitrogen.

Tuning oxygenated functional groups on biochar for water pollution control: A critical review

Lichun Dai et al.

Summary: Biochar has gained attention in water pollution control due to its tunable physico-chemical properties, especially the oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) which act as key active sites for pollutant removal through adsorption and redox reactions. Various strategies for tuning OFGs on biochar have been explored, such as in-situ and ex-situ oxidation, as well as grafting carboxyl groups via reactions like cycloaddition/acylation, leading to enhanced performance in pollutant removal.

Synergistic effect of reduced graphene oxide and near-infrared light on MoS2-mediated electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ya Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents an effective approach to enhance the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution of MoS2 with the synergistic effect of rGO and NIR light. The optimized 0.2rGO-MoS2 composite exhibited enhanced activity in a wide pH range under NIR irradiation, without the need for noble metal addition. The electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution by 0.2rGO-MoS2 under NIR irradiation in both acidic and alkaline media was attributed to the Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism, and the composite showed good reproducibility and durability after repeated cycles and continuous electrolysis.

Molecular Dynamics and Light Absorption Properties of Atmospheric Dissolved Organic Matter

Hongxing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and light absorption measurements to characterize atmospheric dissolved organic matter (ADOM) in aerosol samples from Guangzhou, revealing the influence of environmental factors on the molecular composition and light absorption properties of BrC. Nitrogen-containing species played a key role in the variation of BrC light absorption. Meteorological conditions and anthropogenic activities were identified as the main drivers of BrC composition.

Upgrading of diesel engine exhaust waste into onion-like carbon nanoparticles for integrated degradation sensing in nano-biocomposites

Suvam Nag Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study focuses on utilizing OCNPs extracted from pollutant soot in diesel engine exhaust to develop conductive networks in a PLA matrix for the design of QRS sensors in the field of structural health monitoring of biocomposites. The prepared QRS sensors exhibit large-amplitude signals and a high gauge factor, with reproducible piezo-resistive behavior. The waste-derived OCNPs also demonstrate interesting ferromagnetic properties at room temperature.
