Role of Starch Based Materials as a Bio-sorbents for the Removal of Dyes and Heavy Metals from Wastewater

Fazal Haq et al.

Summary: Native starch has low adsorption ability due to lack of specific functional groups. In order to enhance its adsorption efficiency towards dyes and heavy metals, chemical modification is required to produce specific functional groups on the backbone of starch. Modified starch-based adsorbents have proven to be more useful due to their large surface area, available polar sites, and reproducibility in the degree of activation, making them effective in wastewater treatment.

Photocatalytic degradation of xanthate in flotation plant tailings by TiO2/graphene nanocomposites

Man Jiang et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a TiO2/graphene (TiO2/G) composite photocatalytic material via the hydrothermal method. The TiO2/G nanocomposites showed a large specific surface area, small pore size, and low electron-hole pair complexation rate, resulting in efficient degradation of pollutants. By anchoring TiO2 on graphene oxide (GO), the photoresponse range of TiO2/G was broadened and its photocatalytic efficiency was significantly improved. This work is important for the development of photocatalytic systems for the treatment of mineral processing wastewater.

Effective use of recycled waste PET in cementitious grouts for developing sustainable semi-flexible pavement surfacing using artificial neural network (ANN)

Muhammad Imran Khan et al.

Summary: This study explores the effective recycling of waste PET through exposure to gamma rays for the formulation of cementitious grouts for semi-flexible pavement surfaces. The results show that using waste PET as a replacement for cement significantly increases the flow value of the grouts, and irradiated PET can partially restore the strength loss. The addition of FA and SF enhances the compressive strength of the grouts. Microstructural analysis confirms that irradiated PET leads to densification and refinement of the microstructure. The developed artificial neural network models demonstrate a strong correlation between experimental and predicted results. The research suggests that irradiation can allow for the recycling of more waste PET while maintaining similar strength properties, providing a sustainable solution for waste PET recycling.
