White lupin (Lupinus albus L.) exposed to elevated atmospheric CO2 requires additional phosphorus for N2 fixation

James B. O'Sullivan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of elevated CO2 on phosphorus (P) requirement for enhanced N2 fixation in white lupin plants. The results showed that elevated CO2 increased the critical P concentration needed for N2 fixation, indicating that more P is required to support greater N2 fixation under elevated CO2. Additionally, elevated CO2 improved N2 fixation in P-deficient plants by increasing nitrogenase activity and excess cation uptake.

Summary: This study investigates the composition and functions of microbial communities in agricultural soils of a semiarid agroecosystem, and their relationship with soil depth and physicochemical properties. The results show significant effects of soil depth on microbial community composition and functions, with the middle soil depth exhibiting higher taxonomic diversity.

Mineral-enriched biochar delivers enhanced nutrient recovery and carbon dioxide removal

Wolfram Buss et al.

Summary: Mineral doping of biomass before pyrolysis can reduce carbon loss, lower the cost of carbon dioxide removal, and improve the nutrient value of biochar and the availability of phosphorus. This method not only offers a ready-to-implement carbon dioxide removal technology, but also addresses global phosphorus and potassium shortages.

Biochar-based fertilizer amendments improve the soil microbial community structure in a karst mountainous area

Taotao Yan et al.

Summary: Biochar-based fertilizer amendments can significantly increase soil carbon and nutrient contents, enhance soil microbial abundance and diversity, promote the scale and complexity of microbial co-occurrence networks, and beneficially contribute to the restoration of karst-degraded soils.

How biochar works, and when it doesn't: A review of mechanisms controlling soil and plant responses to biochar

Stephen Joseph et al.

Summary: Biochar properties and effects largely depend on feedstock and pyrolysis conditions. Studies found that biochars can increase P availability, decrease heavy metal concentrations in plant tissues, and reduce non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. Adding biochar can significantly increase crop yields, especially in P-sorbing acidic soils and sandy soils in drylands.

Intercropping of Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) and Chinese Chestnut: Variation in the Structure of Rhizosphere Bacterial Communities

Tian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and diversity of soil microbial communities in the tea-Chinese chestnut intercropping system. The findings suggest that certain bacterial taxa in the rhizosphere soil positively correlate with nutrient availability for tea plants, and the effects of intercropping on soil fertility vary depending on tree age and season. Additional data collection is recommended for the scientific application of intercropping systems.

Seasonal change is a major driver of soil resistomes at a watershed scale

Qian Xiang et al.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between seasonal variability and soil antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) profiles, as well as a weak distance-decay relationship with geographic distances. Strong interactions were observed between specific soil ARGs and Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. The relative abundance of these bacteria correlated significantly with annual mean temperature and annual mean precipitation at a watershed scale.
