An overview on biochar production, its implications, and mechanisms of biochar-induced amelioration of soil and plant characteristics

Fasih Ullah Haider et al.

Summary: This review explores the use of biochar as an effective additive for improving low-fertility soils and promoting plant growth. It discusses the methods and conditions for biochar production, as well as the effects of pyrolysis temperature, feedstock type, and retention time on the properties of biochar. The review also highlights the various ways in which biochar can enhance soil physical and chemical properties, improve plant nutrient uptake and growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimize plant diseases, and facilitate the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. The possible mechanisms for biochar-induced soil and plant improvement are described, and the challenges associated with biochar utilization are discussed.

Biochar and its manure-based feedstock have divergent effects on soil organic carbon and greenhouse gas emissions in croplands

Cole D. Gross et al.

Summary: Applying organic amendments such as biochar to soil can increase soil organic carbon storage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture. This study found that biochar addition led to increased surface SOC sequestration and reduced GHG emissions compared to manure compost. Policy initiatives should focus on optimizing biochar production-application systems for effective climate change mitigation in agriculture.

The composition, energy, and carbon stability characteristics of biochars derived from thermo-conversion of biomass in air-limitation, CO2, and N2 at different temperatures

Liang Wu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the characteristics of biochars derived from the thermo-conversion of pine sawdust and wheat straw in different atmospheres. The results showed that biochars produced in CO2 and N-2 atmospheres at higher temperatures had higher energy densification ratios and carbon stability. However, biochars produced in air-limitation had higher yields.

Temporal complementarity between roots and mycorrhizal fungi drives wheat nitrogen use efficiency

Haishui Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a temporal complementarity pattern between roots and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in wheat nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). Pre-anthesis N uptake efficiency is mainly affected by root traits, while the efficiency to utilize the pre-anthesis N for grain production is strongly influenced by AMF. The association between roots and AMF reduces N remobilization efficiency in high NUE varieties, but significantly improves post-anthesis N uptake.

Potassium availability influences the mesophyll structure to coordinate the conductance of CO2 and H2O during leaf expansion

Wenshi Hu et al.

Summary: Leaf growth depends on photosynthesis and hydraulics for carbohydrates and expansion power. Under potassium deficiency, leaf area, photosynthesis, and hydraulics are affected by changes in leaf structure. This study observed the leaf hydraulic conductance and photosynthetic rate of Brassica napus during leaf growth under different levels of potassium supply. The results showed that potassium deficiency decreased leaf hydraulic conductance and photosynthetic rate. It also led to an increase in mesophyll cell investment and a decrease in the volume fraction of intercellular air-space, resulting in reduced leaf expansion rate.

Spatial distribution patterns and influencing factors of soil carbon, phosphorus, and C:P ratio on farmlands in southeastern China

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon, total phosphorus, and the carbon-to-phosphorus ratio are important indicators of soil fertility. This study characterized the spatial patterns and driving factors of these indicators in farmland in Jiangxi Province, China. The results showed that soil physicochemical properties had the most significant influence on these indicators, with soil total nitrogen identified as the main driver. The findings provide insights for assessing soil carbon and phosphorus pools and sustainable agricultural development.

Compositional heterogeneity of different biochar: Effect of pyrolysis temperature and feedstocks

Shaon Kumar Das et al.

Summary: The study found that the properties of biochar are mainly influenced by feedstock types rather than pyrolytic temperature. With an increase in pyrolysis temperature, the total carbon content and cation exchange capacity of biochar increased, while dissolved organic carbon decreased. By selecting the right feedstock type and standardizing pyrolytic temperature, biochar with different properties can be produced for specific environmental applications.

Biochar in climate change mitigation

Johannes Lehmann et al.

Summary: Climate change mitigation strategies based on biochar generation and its application to agricultural soils can effectively sequester carbon, with trade-offs between biogeochemical and economic considerations. Emission reductions and CO2 removal by biochar systems depend on the energy being replaced, with varying impacts when biochar is used instead of coal or renewable energy sources. Opportunities for increasing crop yields exist with biochar additions, but the trade-offs and relationships among emissions reductions, energy production, and fertilizer responses must be carefully considered for effective climate change mitigation.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial distribution of wheat yield, soil nutrient supply capacity, and fertilizer requirements in major wheat production regions in China using data from field experiments. Variation in yield and fertilizer requirements across different regions was observed, with North-central China and the northern part of the Middle and Lower reaches of the Yangtze River requiring more fertilizer compared to other regions. Incorporating spatial variation of attainable yield and fertilizer requirements into wheat production practices could benefit sustainable wheat production and environmental safety.
