Occurrence and distribution of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in wastewater related riverbank groundwater

Lin Ma et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are commonly found emerging contaminants in groundwater, posing risks to drinking water safety and human health. This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of nine PPCPs in riverbank groundwater and adjacent rivers, finding variations in concentrations and major compounds depending on sampling locations and water systems. The spatial distribution of PPCPs in riverbank groundwater was influenced by hydraulic connection and aquifer lithology. Significant correlations were found between PPCP concentrations and physicochemical factors in groundwater. Overall, this study provides important evidence on the role of lithology and hydrological conditions in the composition, distribution, and influential factors of PPCPs in riverbank groundwater.

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water streams: Occurrence, detection, and removal by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Ivan Lozano et al.

Summary: Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants with adverse effects on organisms and human health. Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs) are effective in removing PPCPs. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal compounds are the main categories of PPCPs detected. Further research is needed to understand the removal of PPCPs under realistic conditions.

A review toward contaminants of emerging concern in Brazil: Occurrence, impact and their degradation by advanced oxidation process in aquatic matrices

Eduardo O. Marson et al.

Summary: This work presents data on the occurrence and treatment of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in Brazil in the past decade. The study reveals the detection of various pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, hormones, illicit drugs, caffeine, and bisphenol A in different matrices. The inefficiency of conventional wastewater treatment methods and lack of basic sanitation contribute to the contamination of Brazilian aquatic environments and pose environmental and health risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered viable alternatives to degrade CECs and prevent contamination. However, most studies evaluate the treatment of distilled water or simulated effluent, highlighting the importance of conducting studies in real matrices to drive the implementation of AOPs in water and wastewater treatment plants.

Decomposition of N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide by water plasma with mist generation

Soon-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: This study presents the decomposition of a high concentration of N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) by water plasma with mist generation. The results showed that the decomposition rate of DEET was improved with an increase in arc current. Major effluent gases included H-2, CO2, CO, and N-2, while the total organic carbon (TOC) in the effluent liquid was reduced by up to 98%. Water plasma was found to be a robust driving force for processing organic wastes as an alternative green technology.

Properties and fate and transport of persistent and mobile polar organic water pollutants: A review

Erik R. R. Christensen et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the properties and fate of polar organic pollutants in natural waters and engineered aquatic systems. It discusses the occurrence and treatment efficiencies of various compound groups, including PFAS, pesticides, PPCPs, and other compounds. The review also presents a new approach to characterizing mobile compounds based on their basic properties and provides insights into the current status and research needs of aquatic and multimedia models. The findings suggest that many pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors can be effectively removed from water through sorption, chemical oxidation, photolysis, and biodegradation. Additionally, sediment core profiles may not accurately reflect the chronological production and use of polar organics due to post-depositional mobility of water-soluble compounds. The review proposes a novel method for identifying mobile compounds using sediment records, and highlights the development of models for PFAS, insecticides, fungicides, atrazine, and pharmaceuticals.

Distribution and characteristics of wastewater treatment plants within the global river network

Heloisa Ehalt Macedo et al.

Summary: The main objective of wastewater treatment plants is to remove pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged into waterbodies. However, these plants cannot remove all contaminants, making them concentrated sources of residual pollution. Detailed information about these plants, including their locations and characteristics, is crucial for understanding the impact of their discharges and improving their management. A global database, called HydroWASTE, has been developed to provide information on over 58,000 wastewater treatment plants worldwide.

Evaluation of the oestrogenic potential of oestrone and bisphenol-A on the reproduction of Astyanax bimaculatus males after subacute exposure

Alessandro Loureiro Paschoalini et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of estrone and bisphenol-A alone and in combination on spermatogenesis in Astyanax bimaculatus. The results showed that estrone and the estrone + bisphenol-A mixture significantly altered the number of spermatogenic cells, while bisphenol-A exhibited higher cytotoxicity. Analysis suggested that the estrone + bisphenol-A mixture did not have additive or synergistic effects.
