Ferrihydrite enrichment in the rhizosphere of unsaturated soil improves nutrient retention while limiting arsenic and uranium plant uptake

Arindam Malakar et al.

Summary: Improving nutrient retention and reducing plant uptake of geogenic contaminants like arsenic and uranium can be achieved by amending unsaturated soil with ferrihydrite nanominerals. Low doses of iron nanomineral soil amendment positively influence rhizosphere geo-chemical processes, enhancing nutrient plant availability and reducing trace contaminants plant uptake.

Spatial heterogeneity of chemistry of the Small Aral Sea and the Syr Darya River and its impact on plankton communities

Piotr Klimaszyk et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the chemistry, phyto- and zooplankton composition in the waters of the shrinking Aral Sea and its tributary. Differences in chemical properties were observed between the two ecosystems. The results provide a reference point for future monitoring and contribute to understanding of the biological transformations in the Aral Sea.

A review of water pollution arising from agriculture and mining activities in Central Asia: Facts, causes and effects

Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Central Asia is facing severe water shortages and pollution issues, primarily caused by mining and agriculture activities. High concentrations of heavy metals and radionuclides result from mining, while substances like ammonia, nitrogen, and phosphorus are mainly from agriculture. Additionally, soil salinization and salt dust storms exacerbate water pollution in the region.
