Volatile Methyl Siloxanes as Key Biogas Pollutants: Occurrence, Impacts and Treatment Technologies

Laura Rivera-Montenegro et al.

Summary: Volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS) generated from the metabolism of polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) in anaerobic digestion processes are biogas pollutants. In recent years, the widespread presence of VMS in different types of biogas has been demonstrated due to the intensive use of PDMS in various products. This review provides an overview of VMS concentrations in biogas, available physical-chemical technologies, and alternative biological processes for VMS removal. Critical research niches and challenges towards the consolidation of efficient and cost-effective VMS treatment systems are identified and discussed.

Recent advances in siloxanes removal from biogas and their efficiency: a short review

Camila M. A. C. Alves et al.

Summary: Siloxanes are common industrial compounds found in daily products. When they enter sewage and waste treatment systems, they can increase the concentration of siloxanes in biogas and form other compounds like SiO and SiO2 during combustion, leading to increased wear and maintenance downtime of engine components. Various methods for removing siloxanes have been proposed in the literature, with activated carbon being the most commonly used method, but there are limitations in its industrial application.

Innovative polishing stage in biogas upgrading: Siloxanes abatement in an anoxic two-phase partitioning biotrickling filter

Celia Pascual et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of anoxic biodegradation of siloxanes in a two-phase partitioning biotrickling filter using silicone oil. Results showed that D4 and D5 had higher removal efficiencies compared to L2 and L3. The best performance was achieved with a silicone oil content of 45%. A specialized bacteria consortium dominated by specific genera was associated with anoxic siloxanes degradation.

Effect of pH on the performance of an acidic biotrickling filter for simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane from biogas

Yuyao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of an acidic biotrickling filter (BTF) under different pH conditions for simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane from biogas. The findings showed that higher removal rates of D5 were achieved under more acidic conditions, while the efficient removal of D5 was attributed to the lower partition coefficient and higher mass transfer coefficient under acidic pH conditions. Operating the BTF at pH 1.2 was found to be optimal for the simultaneous removal of H2S and siloxane.

Summary: This study evaluated two biogas purification systems for efficient removal of H2S and D5, finding that the combination of BTF and AC was more profitable than IOBA and AC, despite higher initial capital investment. The BTF-AC combination achieved high elimination rates for both H2S and D5, providing cost savings and the benefit of heat production, making it a more profitable option for biogas production.
