The effects of biomineralization on the localised phase and microstructure evolutions of bacteria-based self-healing cementitious composites

Linzhen Tan et al.

Summary: Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is an effective mechanism for achieving self healing abilities in cementitious composites. This study assessed the effect of biomineralization on cementitious binders, finding that the MICP process not only forms CaCO3 polymorphs to close cracks, but also modifies phase assemblages near the healed cracks. It was also observed that ettringite and C-S-H can act as calcium providers for the biomineralization process when the common source of calcium (calcium hydroxide) is limited. In addition, loose particle-like calcium carbonate crystals can form in pores and voids, suggesting that healing can occur in deeper sections of the crack.

Summary: This study investigated the reaction kinetics and phase formation of Calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gels by synthesizing gels with different Ca/Si ratios and amounts of PAAm-co-PAA. The results showed that increasing the Ca/Si ratio enhanced the formation of CSH, while the addition of PAAm-co-PAA retarded the reaction rate and reduced the negative impact over time.

Summary: The application of alkali-activation technology to prepare alkali-activated MSWIFA material holds potential to immobilize heavy metals and enhance its pozzolanic property for manufacturing building material. Adding metakaolin in AAFA significantly improves compressive strength, with the addition of sodium silicate increasing strength further. AAFA and AAFM successfully suppress leaching behaviors of certain metals to meet Chinese standards.

Effects of pH on the nano/micro structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under sulfate attack

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: pH plays a crucial role in the deterioration behavior of C-S-H during sulfate attack, with lower pH aggravating decalcification and higher alkalinity enhancing resistance. Under low-pH sulfate attack, C-S-H exhibits a relatively loose structure with increased mean chain length and proportion of large pores.

Adsorption mechanisms of fatty acids on fluorite unraveled by infrared spectroscopy and first-principles calculations

Yann Foucaud et al.

Summary: The research combined diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the adsorption mechanisms of fatty acids on minerals. It was found that at low concentrations, the asymmetric stretching vibration of COO peaks at 1560 cm(-1), while at higher concentrations, it appears as a doublet at 1535 cm(-1) and 1575 cm(-1). The study highlighted the role of carboxylate countercation for the first time, offering new insights for developing innovative strategies to enhance mineral separation contrast.

Yumi Kim et al.

Summary: Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a bio-geochemical process involving calcium carbonate precipitation and possible co-precipitation of other metals. The study found that different metals have varying effects on bioprecipitation, with lead and strontium showing over 99% removal efficiency, while copper, zinc, and cadmium exhibited lower removal efficiency. The types and concentrations of metals significantly influenced the mineralogy of calcium carbonates precipitated and the rates of metal removal.
