A review on the fate and transport behavior of engineered nanoparticles: possibility of becoming an emerging contaminant in the groundwater

K. Dibyanshu et al.

Summary: The application of engineered nanoparticles has increased significantly in various sectors in recent times, leading to their release in the environment. This review paper summarizes the occurrence and toxic effects of different engineered nanoparticles, as well as their fate and transport behavior in subsurface porous media. The study finds that carbon nanotubes and iron-based nanoparticles are primarily retained through straining, while silver, graphene oxide, and fullerene nanoparticles may undergo deposition with site blocking and some degree of straining. Hetero-deposition is suggested for zinc oxide nanoparticles. The risk of release is higher for silver, fullerene, graphene oxide, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, with slow detachment and some degree of dissolution of zinc oxide nanoparticles under groundwater conditions potentially contributing to long-term contamination.

Xiao Chen et al.

Summary: This study cloned and characterized SOD-related genes from marine rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and found that SOD activity and expression were affected by the nutritional status. Exposure to MPs reduced rotifer density and increased oxidative stress indicators under the refeeding condition but had no effect under the feeding and starvation conditions.

Water Chemistry, Exposure Routes, and Metal Forms Determine the Bioaccumulation Dynamics of Silver (Ionic and Nanoparticulate) in Daphnia magna

Emma Lesser et al.

Summary: Treatment wetlands use physical and biological processes to reduce organic contaminants and metals. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can enter treatment wetlands and affect their efficiency. This study investigated the bioaccumulation of silver in filter-feeding zooplankton exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations. The results showed that nanoparticulate silver had a greater potential for bioaccumulation than dissolved silver, and high concentrations of silver could inhibit feeding, leading to reduced treatment wetland performance.

Microplastic Fibers Increase Sublethal Effects of AgNP and AgNO3 in Daphnia magna by Changing Cellular Energy Allocation

Paula S. Tourinho et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that short-term exposure to microplastic fibers increased the toxicity of silver at a subcellular level (i.e., CEA), but not at the individual level (i.e., immobilization). This highlights the importance of combining different levels of biological organization to fully assess the ecotoxicological effects of plastics in association with environmental contaminants.

Transcriptomic analysis and transgenerational effects of ZnO nanoparticles on Daphnia magna: Endocrine-disrupting potential and energy metabolism

Qianju Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chronic toxicity and intergenerational effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna through transcriptomic analysis. The exposure of parent daphnia to ZnO NPs resulted in inhibited reproduction and growth, accompanied by downregulation of genes involved in lysosomal and phagosome, energy metabolism, and endocrine disruption pathways. Partial recovery of growth and reproductive inhibition was observed in subsequent generations, suggesting limited transgenerational effects.

Food abundance mediates the harmful effects of ZnO nanoparticles on development and early reproductive performance of Daphnia magna

Yunfei Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of food abundance and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles concentration on the development and reproductive performance of Daphnia magna. The results showed that high levels of ZnO nanoparticles and low abundance of algae had a negative effect on the life history of D. magna. Higher abundance of algae reduced the negative effect of ZnO nanoparticles, but the negative effect could not be eliminated. The findings highlight the importance of considering food abundance when evaluating the impact of pollutants on zooplankton.

The Combined Effect of Plastic Particles Size and Concentration on Rotifers' (Brachionus plicatilis) Performance

Sui Yamning et al.

Summary: The presence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems is a global concern, with nano-sized plastics being especially harmful. This study evaluated the combined impacts of different sizes and concentrations of polystyrene microspheres on the overall performance of rotifers. The results showed that high concentrations of microplastics close to the nanometer size significantly impaired the vitality of rotifers, while medium-sized microplastics had minimal damage except for specific groups.

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that ZnO nanoparticles at environmental-relevant concentrations can impair the top-down effects of protozoan on toxic Microcystis by reducing Microcystis populations and ingestion rate, as well as disturbing the functions of their digestive organelles. This highlights the need to consider the interfering effects of environmental pollutants on the efficiency of cyanobacterial removal by protozoans in natural waters.

Summary: Microplastics are a significant solid waste pollutant in marine environments, and this study investigated their presence in sediment samples from the southwestern Kerkennah archipelago in Tunisia. The study found microplastics in all samples, predominantly in the form of fibers and fragments, with white and transparent colors being the most common. Additionally, trace metals such as Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni were also detected in the sediments at concentrations ranging from 0.12 to 3.48 μg/g.

Wenwen Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that undissociated TiO2 NPs and SiO2 NPs had weaker toxicity to Daphnia pulex, primarily exerting their toxic effects by promoting molting and improving energy metabolism. In contrast, dissociated ZnO NPs mainly caused toxicity by releasing Zn ions, inhibiting molting and gene expressions. The results suggest that the toxic mechanisms of dissociated NPs differ from undissociated NPs.

Toxicity evaluation of nano-TiO2 in the presence of functionalized microplastics at two trophic levels: Algae and crustaceans

Vignesh Thiagarajan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the toxic effects of three different types of surface-functionalized polystyrene microplastics on nano-TiO2 across two trophic levels in the presence of Chlorella sp. and Artemia salina. Different types of microplastics showed varied effects on the toxicity of nano-TiO2, while the exposure routes (aqueous and dietary) also influenced the toxicity, uptake, and accumulation of nano-TiO2 in Artemia salina. Biomagnification factors of nano-TiO2 did not show significant changes, indicating negligible transfer from Chlorella sp. to Artemia salina under the influence of different microplastics.
