Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Vancomycin removal using TiO2-clinoptilolite/UV in aqueous media and optimisation using response surface methodology

Fatemeh Dehghani et al.

Summary: Investigations have found traces of antibiotics in water sources, wastewater treatment plants, and drinking water. However, conventional wastewater treatment methods are not completely effective for degrading vancomycin. Advanced oxidation is a widely used method for antibiotic degradation in water. This study used the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD) to explore and optimize the effect of independent variables on vancomycin degradation. The results showed that under optimal conditions (pH = 5, vancomycin concentration = 30 mg/L, TiO2-clinoptilolite content = 50.2 mg in a 250 mL reactor volume, temperature = 32.24 degrees C, and reaction time = 50.9 min), the vancomycin degradation efficiency reached 97%.
