Effects of salinity on the leaching of ionic species from hydrocarbon target formations during hydraulic fracturing

Katherine N. Snihur et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of using laboratory methods to predict the inorganic chemistry of flowback and produced water in hydraulic fracturing operations. High salinity experiments showed an increase in concentrations of dissolved species with increasing salinity. The research also highlights the environmental risks associated with using recycled produced water in hydraulic fracturing, especially in the event of a spill.

Iron-based metal organic framework MIL-88-A for the degradation of naproxen in water through persulfate activation

Rime El Asmar et al.

Summary: This study focused on the catalytic activation of persulfate by synthetic iron-based MOFs, such as MIL-88-A, for the degradation of naproxen in water. The results showed efficient degradation of naproxen and recyclability of MIL-88-A, with optimal conditions at acidic pH and enhanced performance under UVA irradiation. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed the adsorption and degradation mechanism of naproxen on the surface of MIL-88-A, demonstrating the potential of this AOP-based technology for removing pharmaceutical compounds from water.

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopic Analyses of Microbiological Samples and Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles of Microbial Origin: Sample Preparation Effects

Alexander A. Kamnev et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the importance of sample preparation in FTIR spectroscopy of microbiological materials by comparing bacterial biomass samples and selenium nanoparticles. Grinding of biomass samples results in slight shifting of bands, while longer drying times lead to more reproducible FTIR spectra. SeNPs contain capping layers of proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, with carboxylated components present in the bioorganic capping but largely removed after washing.

Summary: The sustainability of the hydraulic fracturing water cycle is a topic of debate in North America and China. Common environmental risks exist in the two largest HF regions, with challenges such as water stress, contamination of aquatic and soil systems, and induced seismicity. Standardized practices and ecotoxicological studies are needed to address these issues and prevent adverse effects.

COD removal from gasfield produced water using photoelectrocatalysis process on coil type microreactor

Sadegh Ebadi et al.

Summary: A special reactor with high active surface-to-volume ratio was used for investigating organic pollutants degradation in gasfield produced water through photoelectrocatalysis. After a simple evaporation process to reduce TDS, the distilled wastewater was treated again by photoelectrocatalysis, with a significant decrease in COD removal efficiency to 81%.

Characterizing Returning Polymers in Hydraulic-Fracturing Flowback and Produced Water: Implications for Colloid Formation

Konstantin von Gunten et al.

Summary: The study found that the use of different types of breakers affected the amount of solids and degree of hydrolysis in produced water, as well as the change in polymer molecular weight. Increased concentrations of polymer fragments may lead to higher abundance of metal-carrying colloidal phases, causing potential issues with heavy metal mobility during produced water spills.
