The occurrence of geogenic fluoride in shallow aquifers of Kenya Rift Valley and its implications in groundwater management

Njagi Felix Mwiathi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the occurrence and origins of high-fluoride groundwater in regions with volcanic bedrocks, using Kenya Rift Valley as a case study. It finds that fluoride in groundwater is mainly derived from the weathering of volcanic rocks, which leads to high fluoride concentrations in shallow groundwater. The alkaline condition and clay minerals play a crucial role in controlling fluoride release and accumulation in these groundwater systems.

Sustainable and efficient stabilization/solidification of Pb, Cr, and Cd in lead-zinc tailings by using highly reactive pozzolanic solid waste

Haojie Wang et al.

Summary: Lead-zinc tailings can be effectively immobilized by using solid waste such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and rice husk ashes (RHAs), which significantly reduces the risk of heavy metal contamination. The hydration products formed during the stabilization process provide strength and stability to the immobilized metals. This method opens up new perspectives for the disposal of heavy metals using accessible agricultural waste, and shows certain economic benefits.
