Occurrence, distribution, and input pathways of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in soils near different sources in Shanghai

Qinghe Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and compositions of PFAS in soils near different potential sources in Shanghai. The results showed that the concentrations of PFAS varied among different locations, with the highest concentrations near the fire station. PFAS in soils were mainly composed of short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids. Principal component analysis indicated different correlations between long-chain and short-chain PFAS. Strong positive correlations were found within three groups of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids. PFAS near the fire station were likely directly emitted from a point source, while PFAS near other sites had multiple input pathways.

Adsorption of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and paracetamol onto activated carbon prepared from effluent treatment plant sludge of the beverage industry

Angelica F. M. Streit et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of sludge-derived activated carbons for pharmaceuticals adsorption in aqueous media. The ABSAC showed superior adsorption efficiency compared to BSAC, with higher surface area and total pore volume. The adsorbent proved to be highly efficient in removing pharmaceutical compounds in a simulated drug effluent, making it a promising candidate for treating pharmaceutical contaminants in industrial wastewater.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances exposure during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Xuping Gao et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that exposure to PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth, while PFAS exposure may be linked to the risk of miscarriage and preeclampsia. More research is needed to confirm these findings due to limited evidence for most associations.

Carolina M. Kerkhoff et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon was prepared using endocarp of Butia capitata, showing efficient removal of ketoprofen and paracetamol from water. The activated carbon had a microporous structure with a high specific surface area and pore volume. Kinetics showed rapid adsorption for both pharmaceuticals, with equilibrium reached in 120 minutes for ketoprofen and 180 minutes for paracetamol.

Adsorption of ketoprofen and 2-nitrophenol on activated carbon prepared from winery wastes: A combined experimental and theoretical study

Lotfi Sellaoui et al.

Summary: Experimental data shows that activated carbon produced from wastes deriving from a winery industry has different adsorption capacities for 2-nitrophenol and ketoprofen, with temperature playing a significant role. The modeling analysis suggests that a double layer model is suitable for describing the adsorption mechanisms, and the adsorption energy results indicate that physical interactions are responsible for the adsorption of the pollutants.
