Indoor air pollution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emitted by computers

Sung-Hee Seo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of indoor air pollution and potential levels of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from computers. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were the dominant compounds in the indoor environment. The study found that PAH emissions from computers contribute to indoor air pollution and are influenced by factors such as computer age, operating time, internal temperature, and size. In addition, this study identified computers as a source of indoor PAHs. The inhalation exposure of adults in the office to PAHs was found to be below the risk threshold set by the US EPA.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of PAHs in indoor dust samples collected from various building microenvironments in Bushehr city. The results showed that smoking cafes had the highest levels of contaminants, while laboratories had the lowest. Additionally, the study found significant associations between PAHs concentration and ventilation rate, as well as smoking indoors.

Semivolatile organic compounds in French schools: Partitioning between the gas phase, airborne particles and settled dust

Wenjuan Wei et al.

Summary: The study of SVOC concentrations in 308 nurseries and elementary schools in France revealed that phthalates had the highest concentrations in both air and dust. Other SVOCs, including tributyl phosphate, fluorene, phenanthrene, gamma-HCH, galaxolide, and tonalide, also showed high concentrations in both the air and dust. The results also included theoretical equations to estimate SVOC partitioning between air and settled dust.

Summary: The study analyzed polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in indoor and outdoor air at preschools in Stockholm, Sweden, finding higher levels of PACs outdoors. The sources of PACs were identified as vehicle emissions and biomass burning. Presence of high carcinogenic PAHs in indoor dust could impact indoor air quality and children's health.

Liying Dong et al.

Summary: The neurotoxic effects of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are mainly manifested in direct neurotoxicity and disruption of the neuroendocrine system, affecting neurobehavior and reproductive development. The mechanism is related to the complex interaction of neural and endocrine signals.

Neurotoxicity of Ortho-Phthalates: Recommendations for Critical Policy Reforms to Protect Brain Development in Children

Stephanie M. Engel et al.

Summary: Robust data from longitudinal birth cohort studies and experimental studies suggest that exposure to ortho-phthalates can impair brain development and increase risks for learning, attention, and behavioral disorders in childhood. Immediate policy reforms are needed to eliminate ortho-phthalates from products and reduce exposures, with specific attention to socially vulnerable populations. Multi-pronged regulatory approaches at federal and state levels are necessary for the feasible goal of eliminating ortho-phthalates.
