Charge Transport in Organic Semiconductors: The Perspective from Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics

Samuele Giannini et al.

Summary: Organic semiconductors have enabled disruptive technologies in this century, but the nature of charge transport in these materials has puzzled scientists for many years. Recent progress in theory and simulation has led to a unified understanding, and this paper reviews a tool called direct charge carrier propagation by quantum-classical nonadiabatic molecular dynamics. The simulations show that charge carriers in these materials can either localize or delocalize depending on various factors, and predict the formation of flickering polarons that expand and propagate through the material.

Molecular spinterface in F4TCNQ-doped polymer spin valves

Dongxue Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports for the first time the use of molecular doping as an effective strategy to enhance conductivity and modify spinterface in vertical OSV devices, showing a significant improvement in both conductivity and magnetoresistance ratio. The doping of F(4)TCNQ in the form of free radicals creates a spin-dependent hybrid interfacial state (SDHIS) which exhibits an extra interface magnetoresistance (IMR) effect on top of the standard giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect.

Comprehending radicals, diradicals and their bondings in aggregates of imide-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Jiani Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the structural and optical properties of imide-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (IPAHs) and their radicals using the variational Davydov ansatz parametrized by density functional theory. Our calculations revealed that hydrogen plays a crucial role in the formation of radicals and the generation of a mid-gap polaronic state. The simulations of UV-vis absorption spectra and NIR absorption signals supported our findings and demonstrated the formation of radical-radical bonding (pancake bonding) as the physical basis for long-range ferromagnetic orders. Additionally, we predicted the absorption spectra of perylene diimide (PDI), terrylene diimide (TDI) and their radicals.

π-electron weak ferromagnetism in potassium-intercalated 9-phenylanthracene

Ming-An Fu et al.

Summary: Intercalating alkali metal into polyaromatic hydrocarbons can tune their physicochemical properties. In this study, weak ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 5.2 K was realized in potassium-intercalated 9-phenylanthracene, with an antiferromagnetic transition at around 35 K. The weak ferromagnetism is attributed to intramolecular ferromagnetic and intermolecular antiferromagnetic spin couplings in the crystal unit cell.

Summary: The study presents a simple and effective method to achieve nonvolatile memory in organic spin valves by doping the organic interlayer, which introduces traps and affects charge and spin transport. The doped organic spin valves exhibit current-voltage hysteresis and reversible resistive switching behavior, indicating successful achievement of nonvolatile memory. The trap-controlled space-charge-limited current model explains the memory effect of the doped devices, while spin diffusion theory based on hyperfine interaction can also explain the corresponding magnetoresistance changes under different resistance states.

Polarized spin-photon coupling in organic ferromagnetic magneto-optic crystals

Yuying Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that photo-magnetic coupling was generated through direct spin-photon interactions in organic ferromagnetic crystals. Spin angular momentum can be directly transferred from the polarized spin of an electron to a photon, altering the polarized state of light. When the temperature exceeds the Curie temperature of organic ferromagnets, spontaneous spin polarization is not generated, leading to the disappearance of photo-magnetic coupling.
