Ultra-narrow optical linewidths in rare-earth molecular crystals

Diana Serrano et al.

Summary: Rare-earth ions show promise as solid-state systems for photonic quantum technologies, but few materials can fully exploit their properties. Molecular systems lack spin states and often have broad optical lines. This study reports on europium molecular crystals that exhibit narrow linewidths, enabling efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light, and control of ion-ion interactions for quantum gates. Rare-earth molecular crystals offer a new platform for photonic quantum technologies with coherent emitters and versatile molecular materials.

Shedding Light on the Oxidizing Properties of Spin-Flip Excited States in a CrIII Polypyridine Complex and Their Use in Photoredox Catalysis

Tobias H. Burgin et al.

Summary: The photoredox activity of Cr(III) polypyridines, which have a spin-flip excited state, is similar to that of Ru(II) polypyridines with metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited states. This insight allows us to use Cr(III) complexes for photocatalytic reactions not previously explored, contributing to the understanding of the fundamental photochemical properties of first-row transition-metal complexes compared to precious-metal-based photocatalysts.

Spin-flip luminescence

Winald Robert Kitzmann et al.

Summary: In this review, the difference between charge-transfer emission and metal-centered transitions in molecular photochemistry is addressed. The focus is on spin-flip emitters, particularly the strongly phosphorescent Cr-III complexes, which have unique properties and different design strategies compared to traditional charge-transfer phosphors. The prerequisites for efficient spin-flip emission are outlined, and the recent progress, challenges, and potential research opportunities in tuning the energies of emissive excited states for spin-flip emitters are discussed.

Optical spin-state polarization in a binuclear europium complex towards molecule-based coherent light-spin interfaces

Kuppusamy Senthil Kumar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficient polarization of ground-state nuclear spins in a binuclear Eu(III) complex, laying the foundation for all-optical spin initialization and addressing. Long-lived spectral holes were observed in the optical transition, breaking the limitation previously seen in SHB in REI-based systems.

Electronic Structures of Cr(III) and V(II) Polypyridyl Systems: Undertones in an Isoelectronic Analogy

Justin P. Joyce et al.

Summary: The study compares the electronic structures and photophysical properties of V2+ and Cr3+ polypyridyl systems, elucidating differences through experimental data and theoretical calculations. Significant distinctions in metal-ligand charge transfer properties and excited state lifetimes between V2+ and Cr3+ complexes are attributed to trigonal distortion and metal-ligand pi-covalency.
