One-Dimensionally Conjugated Carbocyanine Dyes Isolated under Cold Gas-Phase Conditions: Electronic Spectra and Photochemistry

Satoru Muramatsu et al.

Summary: This study presents the electronic spectra of two carbocyanine dyes under cold gas-phase conditions, determining their intrinsic electronic transition energy and providing clear assignments for the spectra. The study shows that the electronic spectra of these dyes are affected by solvent, temperature, and molecule conformers.

Synthesis and Characterization of Hypervalent Pentacoordinate Carbon Compounds Bearing a 7-6-7-Ring Skeleton

Yohsuke Yamamoto et al.

Summary: In this study, triaryl-substituted cationic carbon compounds with a moderately flexible 7-6-7-ring skeleton and sulfur donors were synthesized and characterized to stabilize S(N)2 transition state-like penta-coordinate carbon species. The electronic effects of para substituents (R = Cl, F, H, CH3, SMe, OMe) and a planar bidentate thioxanthene derivative were systematically investigated and shown to have significant impact on the bonding in these compounds.

Double Ion Trap Laser Spectroscopy of Alkali Metal Ion Complexes with a Partial Peptide of the Selectivity Filter in K+ Channels-Temperature Effect and Barrier for Conformational Conversions

Yukina Suzuki et al.

Summary: The conformation of the K+ - peptide complex shows significant variation with temperature, indicating greater flexibility and lower barrier heights when complexed with K+ compared to other metal-peptide complexes. The variability of the conformational distribution with temperature for the ions follows the same order of ion permeability of a K+ channel. This study highlights the power of using an additional temperature-controlled ion trap to explore the conformational landscape of flexible molecular systems.

Conformation of Benzo-12-Crown-4 Complexes with Ammonium Ions Investigated by Cold Gas-Phase Spectroscopy

Ryosuke Goda et al.

Summary: This study examined the conformation and intermolecular interactions of B12C4 complexes with NH4+, MeNH3+, EtNH3+, and PrNH3+ using cold gas-phase spectroscopy. The results indicate that the conformation of B12C4 is influenced by oriented interactions with ammonium guests and the existence of a second conformer for EtNH3+ and PrNH3+ complexes. The main intermolecular interaction occurs between the NH3+ group and crown cavity through N-H···O hydrogen bonds.

Conformer Separation of Dibenzo-Crown-Ether Complexes with Na+ and K+ Ions Studied by Cryogenic Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry

Keijiro Ohshimo et al.

Summary: Cryogenic ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) was used to study conformations of dibenzo-crown-ether complexes with Na+ and K+ ions at 86 K in the gas phase. Different conformer types were observed for the complexes, with some conformers showing consistency with previous laser spectroscopic studies. The formation of closed conformers was influenced by the size of the cavity ring and the specific ion involved.

Spherand complexes with Li+ and Na+ ions in the gas phase: encapsulation structure and characteristic unimolecular dissociation

Motoki Kida et al.

Summary: Our study on the complexes of Cram's hexa(p-anisole) spherands with Li+ and Na+ ions revealed distinct differences in spectral characteristics and dissociation patterns. The dissociation of the Li+ complex resulted in the efficient release of dimethyl ether molecules, leading to the formation of fragment ions with specific moieties.
