Azobenzene-Based Low-Potential Anolyte for Nonaqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

Xiao Wang et al.

Summary: Redox flow batteries (RFBs) using organic materials in organic solvents show promise due to the diversity of organic materials and wide redox-innocent window of organic solvents. Azobenzene compounds demonstrate high electrochemical activity and degradation mechanism in nonaqueous organic RFB systems, making them a potential anolyte material for high-performance RFB applications.

Insights into the Redox Chemistry of Organosulfides Towards Stable Molecule Design in Nonaqueous Energy Storage Systems

Leyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effectiveness of using organosulfides as a new model material system to design redox-active molecules in nonaqueous systems. The TETD molecule shows high solubility and reversible capacity in various organic solvents, along with high electrochemical stability in different organic electrolytes. Material/structural characterizations reveal the underlying mechanism of redox chemistry in organodisulfides involving the cleavage and reformation of disulfide bonds.

Interrogation of 2,2′-Bipyrimidines as Low-Potential Two-Electron Electrolytes

Jeremy D. Griffin et al.

Summary: As the utilization of renewable energy sources expands, the development of new grid energy storage technologies like redox flow batteries (RFBs) becomes crucial. This study focused on a novel electrolyte scaffold based on a 2,2'-bipyrimidine skeleton capable of storing two electrons per molecule at a low reduction potential. Structural-function relationships were systematically evaluated for 24 potential bipyrimidine anolytes to uncover the major decomposition pathway and validate the hypothesis of strain-induced decomposition.

Systematic Designs of Dicationic Heteroarylpyridiniums as Negolytes for Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Seongmo Ahn et al.

Summary: The study developed a new class of pyridinium-based negolytes, which improved molecular stability by introducing benzothiazole and suppressed material crossover with cationic ammonium functional groups. The solubility of the negolyte was increased to around 1 M, showing promising results in terms of capacity-fading rate in RFBs.
