Summary: The efficiency of photo-induced electron transfer in photoredox catalysis can be limited by diffusional collision of excited catalyst and substrate. In this study, cavity-bound photoredox catalysts are introduced to preassociate substrates, leading to significantly shortened reaction times. A proof of concept reaction using pillar[5]arene as a cavity and phenothiazine as a catalyst showed promising results.

Self-assembled metallasupramolecular cages towards light harvesting systems for oxidative cyclization

Summary: The study demonstrates the synthesis of three molecular cages for efficient light harvesting in aqueous medium, with high molar extinction coefficients and large Stokes shifts. These cages exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in water/MeCN mixture and solid state, and can be used as donors for artificial light harvesting systems with high energy efficiency and good antenna effect. The harvested energy from the light harvesting systems was successfully utilized for visible light induced photo-oxidative cross coupling cyclization of N,N-dimethylaniline with N-alkyl/aryl maleimides in aqueous acetonitrile with significant enhancement in yields.
