Summary: Ionic liquids have emerged as popular alternatives to traditional organic solvents due to their unique properties, such as non-flammability and high chemical stability. However, their higher cost compared to conventional solvents poses a challenge in widespread adoption. Recycling of ionic liquids in nanoparticle synthesis has been shown to maintain product quality and potentially reduce costs, making them a competitive option for industrial applications.

Innovative Approach for Preparing a CNT-Supported Pt Nanoparticle Functional Electrocatalyst Using Protic Ionic Liquids

Tomoya Sasaki et al.

Summary: This study presents a simple preparation method for supporting Pt NPs on SWCNTs and MWCNTs at room temperature, achieving high ORR mass activity. The immobilization of Pt NPs on CNT surfaces is facilitated by electrostatic interactions. The Pt-SWCNTs and Pt-MWCNTs prepared using a specific method exhibit significantly improved ORR mass activity due to the small size and high dispersity of Pt NPs. Surprisingly, the ORR activity of Pt-SWCNTs slightly increases after an accelerated degradation test, attributed to a shape variation of Pt NPs from spherical to nanorod-like.

Summary: This research presents a seed-templated approach for the preparation of ultrasmall octahedral platinum nanoparticles with a size of 6.7 nm, demonstrating higher catalytic activity and stability compared to traditional spherical platinum nanoparticles. The octahedral shape shows a higher electrochemical active surface area and specific ORR activity in the oxygen reduction reaction compared to spherical particles of the same size.
