Cr(VI) Reduction by Siderophore Alone and in Combination with Reduced Clay Minerals

Donglei Zhang et al.

Summary: Siderophores and iron-containing clays have been found to influence the transformation of chromium. In this study, the reduction of Cr(VI) by a tri-hydroxamate siderophore alone or in combination with reduced clays was investigated. The results showed that the reduction of Cr(VI) by the siderophore involved a one-electron transfer mechanism, resulting in the formation of Cr(V) intermediate and subsequent reduction to organically complexed Cr(III). Surprisingly, the presence of both the siderophore and reduced clays led to a decrease in the rate and extent of Cr(VI) reduction compared to reduced clays alone, indicating an inhibitory effect of the interaction between the siderophore and clays.

A critical review of mineral-microbe interaction and co-evolution: mechanisms and applications

Hailiang Dong et al.

Summary: Mineral-microbe interactions are vital in understanding environmental change and the formation of ore deposits. Microbes impact the dissolution, transformation, and precipitation of minerals, which in turn affects major geological events. Despite progress made, there are still important questions that require further research.

Effect of organic compounds on the retention of radionuclides in clay rocks: Mechanisms and specificities of Eu(III), Th(IV), and U(VI)

Lizaveta Fralova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of organic compounds on the retention of radionuclides, with a particular focus on U(VI) behavior under geological conditions. Organic compounds disturb the chemical equilibria in pore water, leading to additional complexation of uranyl by calcium and carbonates, which highlights the importance of clay surfaces and carbonate minerals in the retention process.

Fe distribution, redox state and electrochemical activity in Boom Clay

Miroslav Honty et al.

Summary: The distribution of Fe2+/Fe3+ in different Fe-containing minerals in clay formations affects the sensitivity to changing redox conditions. Fe3+ in smectite plays a major role in controlling the measured EAC values in redox cycled Boom Clay samples. Further electrochemical investigations are needed to better understand the natural redox cycled sediments.

Combined Effects of Fe(III)-Bearing Clay Minerals and Organic Ligands on U(VI) Bioreduction and U(IV) Speciation

Limin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the bioreduction of U(VI) by Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32 in the presence of clay minerals and organic ligands. The presence of ligands enhanced the rate of U(VI) bioreduction, with Fe(III)-bearing clays playing a crucial role in the stability of the resulting U(IV) phase. Organic ligands were found to significantly affect the microbial reduction of U(VI) and the formation of soluble U(IV) complexes.
