Mesothermal pretreatment using FeCl3 enhances methane production from rice straw

Jianzheng Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new pretreatment strategy using ferric chloride (FeCl3) to enhance methane production from rice straw. The results show that FeCl3 pretreatment effectively destroys the recalcitrant structure of rice straw, releasing more reducing sugar and significantly increasing methane production.

Zhiyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the progress of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression in both the sidestream and mainstream partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) processes over the past two decades. It highlights the challenges in achieving stable NOB suppression in mainstream treatment and suggests the potential of a hybrid process and combination of strategies for efficient mainstream PN/A.

Determining Factors for Nitrite Accumulation in an Acidic Nitrifying System: Influent Ammonium Concentration, Operational pH, and Ammonia-Oxidizing Community

Jia Meng et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the novel acidic nitrification process and identifies the key factors governing stable nitrite accumulation. The results suggest that stable nitrite accumulation can be maintained under various influent and operational conditions as long as a ppm-level of free nitrous acid (FNA) is established. Furthermore, specific ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities were observed under these conditions.

Synergetic Efficacy of Amending Pb-Polluted Soil with P-Loaded Jujube (Ziziphus mauritiana) Twigs Biochar and Foliar Chitosan Application for Reducing Pb Distribution in Moringa Leaf Extract and Improving Its Anti-cancer Potential

Bilal Rasool et al.

Summary: Soil polluted from Pb-acid batteries effluents (SPB) can reduce the therapeutic potentials of Moringa oleifera and contaminate groundwater and surrounding soils. Amending SPB with P-loaded jujube twigs biochar (P-TB) can overcome these problems. Chitosan spray (CHs) on moringa growing on SPB can further stimulate the production of essential phytochemicals and improve its anti-proliferative effects on human liver cancer cells.

Aspergillus niger-mediated release of phosphates from fish bone char reduces Pb phytoavailability in Pb-acid batteries polluted soil, and accumulation in fenugreek

Hafiz Muhammad Tauqeer et al.

Summary: The study aimed to reduce phytoavailable lead concentration in soil from Pb-acid batteries dismantling units by using Aspergillus niger-mediated release of PO43- from fish bone products. The combination of A. niger with APII-C was the most effective treatment, significantly reducing lead phytoavailability in soil and plant uptake. The grain produced under this treatment was safe for human consumption and improved soil and plant quality parameters.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea and complete ammonia-oxidizing Nitrospira in water treatment systems

Sarah Al-Ajeel et al.

Summary: Nitrification, the process of converting ammonia to nitrate, plays a significant role in engineered water treatment systems. Different microbial guilds participate in this process, however, their relative contributions to nitrogen cycling are still not well understood. Understanding the active nitrifiers is crucial for optimizing engineered systems that rely on nitrifiers for ammonia removal.

Synergy between autotrophic denitrification and Anammox driven by FeS in a fluidized bed bioreactor for advanced nitrogen removal

Jingde Ma et al.

Summary: The novel ferrous sulfide (FeS)-driven autotrophic denitrification (AuDen) and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) coupled system (FS-DADAS) shows promising nitrogen removal performance, achieving over 80% total nitrogen (TN) removal in laboratory testing. The system demonstrated stable denitrification effects over long-term operation, with 100% NO3--N removal and NH4+-N concentrations lower than 8.11 mg L-1 in the effluent.

Insights into complete nitrate removal in one-stage nitritation-anammox by coupling heterotrophic denitrification

Pian-Pian Xu et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of using heterotrophic denitrification to remove residual nitrate in the nitritation-anammox process for nitrogen removal from wastewater. By monitoring a laboratory microaerobic reactor, it was found that high-level nitrogen removal can be achieved through the nitritation-anammox pathway in low-carbon wastewater treatment, with complete nitrate depletion possible by controlling oxygen supply. The study also identified a complex microbial community including nitrifiers, denitrifiers, and anammox bacteria in the reactor biomass.

Nano zero-valent iron improves anammox activity by promoting the activity of quorum sensing system

Zhibin Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of 50 mg/L nZVI in the anammox reactor was found to promote the removal of NH4+ and NO2-, increase the relative abundance of AnAOB, and enrich c-di-GMP in the microbial community. This enrichment of c-di-GMP reduced microbial motility and promoted the secretion of extracellular polymers, ultimately aiding the formation of sludge particles in the reactor.
