This paper provides an overview of the applications, catalytic mechanisms, reactor designs, challenges, and outlook of electrothermal catalysis. It aims to help researchers better understand electrothermal synergistic catalysis phenomena and advance the exploration of electrothermal catalysis.
Despite the dramatic emergence of Joule heating of catalysts as an attractive and powerful approach in various fields, the understanding of the design and mechanisms is still insufficient. For instance, in the case of co-existence of electric and thermal fields, the phenomena and effects are far more complex than those of elec-trostatic and thermal fields alone. In particular, the explanation for the significant activity enhancement phe-nomenon under electrothermal action. This paper provides an overview of the applications of electrothermal catalysis, identifies catalytic mechanisms and reactor designs within each field, and presents the associated challenges and outlook. This work will help researchers to better understand electrothermal synergistic catalysis phenomena and advance the exploration of electrothermal catalysis in the direction of breadth and depth.
