Elastic Nanovaccine Enhances Dendritic Cell-Mediated Tumor Immunotherapy

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: The elasticity-dependent effect of the nanovaccine on dendritic cell-mediated immune responses is studied. The prepared soft mesoporous organosilica-based nanovaccine (SMONV) shows enhanced internalization by dendritic cells and induces effective antigen delivery, leading to immune response activation. Moreover, SMONV also enhances lymphatic drainage of antigens, stimulating robust humoral and cellular immunity.

Potentiating hypoxic microenvironment for antibiotic activation by photodynamic therapy to combat bacterial biofilm infections

Weijun Xiu et al.

Summary: Traditional antibiotic treatment is not very effective against bacteria in biofilms due to their unique metabolic conditions. This study explores the use of photodynamic therapy to eliminate methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilms and enhance the hypoxic microenvironment, which induces anaerobic metabolism and activates the antibacterial activity of metronidazole. Additionally, the activated chemotherapy can promote the repair of biofilm-infected wounds by polarizing macrophages to a specific phenotype.

Antibiofilm Activity of α-Amylase from Bacillus subtilis and Prediction of the Optimized Conditions for Biofilm Removal by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN)

Dibyajit Lahiri et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that partially purified alpha-amylase from Bacillus subtilis has inhibitory effects on biofilms of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, showing better efficacy than commercially purchased alpha-amylase. Response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) are used to predict optimal conditions, which are validated through in vitro experiments. Molecular docking of alpha-amylase with bacterial EPS indicates an efficient energy-driven spontaneous process.

Antibacterial Sonodynamic Therapy: Current Status and Future Perspectives

Jayishnu Roy et al.

Summary: Multidrug-resistant bacteria have emerged in both community and hospital settings due to antibiotics misuse, leading to efforts to explore alternate antibacterial therapies like sonodynamic therapy (SDT) based on physical mechanisms. SDT involves exposing tissues to sensitizing chemical and low-intensity ultrasound, producing reactive oxygen species for treating bacterial infections, with potential for treating deep-seated infections. Efforts are being made to improve the bioavailability of sonosensitizers using targeted delivery agents like nanoparticle composites, liposomes, and microbubbles.

Amylases: Biofilm Inducer or Biofilm Inhibitor?

Dibyajit Lahiri et al.

Summary: Biofilm is a symbiotic association of microbial cells that adhere to surfaces with the help of pili and EPS, which also prevent penetration of antimicrobials. Enzymes, particularly amylase, play important roles in removing biofilms by inhibiting EPS formation. However, salivary amylase can initiate biofilm formation by binding to specific proteins.
