Phosphorus recovery from pig manure: Dissolution of struvite and formation of calcium phosphate granules during anaerobic digestion with calcium addition

Chris Schott et al.

Summary: In this study, the recovery of phosphorus from pig manure was achieved by adding calcium during anaerobic treatment. The addition of calcium showed positive effects on treatment stability and efficiency, resulting in increased phosphorus removal and the formation of calcium phosphate granules. This study highlights the potential of calcium addition for enhancing pig manure treatment and enabling efficient phosphorus recovery.

The impact of biogas production on the organic carbon input to the soil of Dutch dairy farms: A substance flow analysis

Dieu Linh Hoang et al.

Summary: The use of Dutch dairy manure for biogas production is expected to significantly increase, impacting the organic carbon input to soil of dairy farms. The magnitude of this impact varies depending on farming practices and Dutch nutrient regulations. The overall reduction in organic carbon input caused by biogas production is 10%-20%, with the impact being largest in farms with no grazing.

Precipitating phosphorus as struvite from anaerobically-digested dairy manure

Edward Wagner et al.

Summary: Midwestern US agroecosystems are negatively impacted by excessive phosphorus (P) runoff from manure. This study developed a novel processing pipeline to precipitate struvite from dairy manure, removing organic solids and calcium (Ca) through dilution, acidification, and flocculation. The results showed a 93% reduction in dissolved P, indicating that a simple one-step removal of Ca and organic solids can achieve comparable P removal efficiency to multi-step methods.

Characterizing the influence of wastewater composition and lignin content on anaerobic biodegradability

R. A. Labatut et al.

Summary: The composition of wastewater directly affects the efficiency and energy output of anaerobic digestion systems. This study investigated the overall anaerobic biodegradability of complex wastewaters and evaluated the impact of lignin content and temperature. The results showed that proteins, lipids, lignin-free cellulose, and sugars are highly biodegradable.

Manure management and soil biodiversity: Towards more sustainable food systems in the EU

Julia Koninger et al.

Summary: Animal farming generates over 1.4 billion tonnes of manure annually in the EU-27 and UK, with more than 90% used as organic fertilizer. Manure can enhance plant growth and soil diversity, but also poses risks of pollution and nutrient loss. Soil organisms are essential in manure transformation and degradation of toxic elements, yet soil biodiversity is often neglected in manure management practices.

Transition of microbial communities and degradation pathways in anaerobic digestion at decreasing retention time

Miriam Peces et al.

Summary: The study found that adjusting hydraulic retention time (HRT) alone is not sufficient to washout methanogens in anaerobic digestion, requiring a combination of other operational parameters. Changes in metabolic rates and microbial communities under different HRTs led to variations in process performance.

Abiotic methane generation through reduction of serpentinite-hosted dolomite: Implications for carbon mobility in subduction zones

Weigang Peng et al.

Summary: Abiotic methane has been increasingly detected on Earth's surface and other terrestrial planets. This study focuses on abiotic methane generation in subduction zones, specifically the reduction of carbonate minerals under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The results suggest that the alteration of dolomite-bearing lithologies in subduction zones may represent a potential source of abiotic methane, with implications for the transfer of subducted carbon.

Roles of calcium-containing alkali materials on dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion: A systematic review

Junwei Yang et al.

Summary: The accelerated chemical-industry has led to a rapid increase in calcium-containing alkali wastes, posing a great risk to the environment. Anaerobic digestion or dark fermentation is promising for recovering biogas, but the hydrolysis processes remain rate-limiting. Effective pretreatment of substrates is essential for improving biodegradability.

Uncover the secret of granule calcification and deactivation in up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor with long-term exposure to high calcium

Linlin Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the calcification process of anaerobic granular sludge under long-term exposure to high calcium levels and the mechanism causing the decrease of microbial activity. The findings showed that calcified granules had smaller specific surface area and pore volume, disappearing channels, and mass transfer resistance. Additionally, interactions between calcium and extracellular polymeric substances were revealed as a possible mechanism for the location of calcite on the outer layer of anaerobic granular sludge.

Direct Reduction of Magnesium Carbonate to Methane

Carl Mesters et al.

Summary: Carbonate hydrogenation with active catalysts is a promising method for producing valuable hydrocarbons, with methane being the exclusive product in this particular study. Synthetic methane production from sources like direct air capture and sustainable production routes is considered more valuable in a less fossil fuel-dependent economy. Mineral carbonation for CO2 storage, particularly using magnesium silicate minerals, shows potential for high-volume CO2 mitigation. The study also suggests the potential for direct air capture with mineralization of magnesium oxide/magnesium silicate, leading to higher selectivity and yield of methane compared to other metal carbonate sources when properly optimized.

CHARACTERIZATION OF NUTRIENTS AND PILOT BIOFERTILIZER PRODUCTION FROM FOOD WASTE AND DAIRY MANURE DIGESTATES

Tyler J. Barzee et al.

Summary: Experimental results showed that the elemental compositions of the two digestates were different but shared similarities. The coarse solids of both digestates had lower concentrations of nutrients than the liquid fractions, which contained most of the K and Na. An optimization analysis concluded that optimal combinations of digestate fractions included over 70% coarse solids to obtain desired nutrient and salt ratios.
