Removal and fate of 18 bisphenols in lab-scale algal bioreactors

David Skufca et al.

Summary: The removal of 18 bisphenols at wastewater relevant concentrations was investigated in Chlorella vulgaris cultures with pH adjusted to 6.8 and non-adjusted cultures with pH raised to above 10. Most bisphenols showed a correlation between removal and chlorophyll a concentration, indicating the crucial role of algae in their removal.

Multigenerational study of the obesogen effects of bisphenol S after a perinatal exposure in C57BL6/J mice fed a high fat diet

Axelle Brulport et al.

Summary: This study found that perinatal exposure to BPS can lead to sex-dependent obesogen effects in multiple generations of mice. In the F1 generation, male mice showed overweight while female mice exhibited dyslipidemia. In the F2 generation, BPS exposure was associated with increased body weight, fat, and visceral adipose tissue in both males and females.

Performance and bacterial community dynamics of hydroponically grown Iris pseudacorus L. during the treatment of antibiotic-enriched wastewater at low/normal temperature

Hongbin Lu et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, particularly levofloxacin, in constructed wetlands have differential effects on pollutant removal at normal and low temperatures. Temperature and antibiotic concentration play significant roles in the removal of pollutants, with low concentrations of antibiotics promoting degradation of pollutants under normal temperature conditions. Bacterial community richness is higher and diversity lower at normal temperature, while bacterial genera and functions are greatly influenced by antibiotic concentration, temperature, and test time. This study identifies antibiotic and low temperature-resistant microorganisms, providing valuable information for understanding the ecological effects of levofloxacin.

Probing the toxic interactions between bisphenol A and glutathione S-transferase Phi8 from Arabidopsis thaliana

Si-Fu Tang et al.

Summary: This study used glutathione S-transferase Phi8 as a biomarker to evaluate the hazardous oxidative effects of BPA on plants at the molecular level. The binding of BPA with AtGSTF8 led to structural changes and unfolding of AtGSTF8, resulting in decreased glutathione S-transferase activity and plant growth destruction.

Oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis is involved in bisphenol S-induced reproductive toxicity in male C57BL/6 mice

Wei Dai et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to BPS led to a decrease in sperm count, motility, and an increase in deformities, as well as apoptosis and oxidative stress in testicular tissues. This suggests that BPS may impair spermatogenesis and sperm function through inducing oxidative stress-related apoptosis, with the involvement of the Fas/FasL and mitochondrial signal pathways.

Bisphenol S degradation by visible light assisted peroxymonosulfate process based on BiOI/B4C photocatalysts with Z-scheme heterojunction

Yifan Lv et al.

Summary: The study developed a BiOI-based photocatalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate technology using a synthesized Z-scheme heterojunction BiOI/B4C. The results showed high activity and reusability in removing bisphenol S, with synergistic effects enhancing activity and the Z-scheme heterojunction improving separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs. Free radicals played important roles in BPS degradation.

Summary: The study presents a strategy of using CuFe2O4/SBC heterogeneous catalyst to degrade BPS, demonstrating enhanced catalytic performance and alleviated agglomeration. The synergistic effect between CuFe2O4 and SBC improved metal ions leaching but further optimization is needed, and the dominant role of heterogeneous catalysis by CuFe2O4/SBC has been elucidated.

Insights on the role of periphytic biofilm in synergism with Iris pseudacorus for removing mixture of pharmaceutical contaminants from wastewater

Nikita Yadav et al.

Summary: The study found that the consortium of Iris pseudacorus and periphytic biofilm showed enhanced removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) compared to individual sets, while the individual periphytic biofilm outperformed in the removal of doxylamine succinate (DOX). The composition of microflora in periphytic biofilm underwent significant changes, with an increase in microalgae, rhizobacteria, and fungi.
