Liquid or solid? a biologically inspired concentrated suspension for protective coating

Yuxuan Wu et al.

Summary: Thermophiles can survive in high-temperature environments due to their proteins' hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Inspired by this mechanism, a novel MOF-801 based shear thickening fluid (STF) with improved performance at high temperatures has been developed, replacing hydrogen bonds with hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions.

Synthesis of blue light-responsive microspheres for autonomous self-healing coatings

Yuye Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel strategy using a blue light-responsive microsphere system is proposed for autonomous self-healing coatings. The system generates free radicals under blue light irradiation, which are irreversibly consumed by encapsulated polymerization inhibitors. This allows the system to release healing agents through microsphere collapses, promoting the development of photo-responsive self-healing coatings under weak stimuli.

Visualization and monitoring of dynamic damaging-healing processes of polymers by using AIEgen-loaded multifunctional microcapsules

Shusheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a facile design strategy for multifunctional polymer coatings that can sensitively show their damaging-healing processes in an on-site, real-time, and full-field manner. By embedding UV-blocking microcapsules containing an aggregation-induced emission luminogen (AIEgen) into a polymer matrix, immediate turn-on fluorescence is observed upon damage, and dual-signal variations in both the fluorescence intensity and color can be clearly visualized during the dynamic healing process. The high-contrast fluorescence change is achieved due to the collective effects of AIE and twisted intramolecular charge transfer of the luminogen. The composite polymeric coatings also exhibit excellent photo-protective and water-proof performances in addition to the autonomous damaging-healing visualization capability, making them appealing for various practical applications.

Ambiently and Mechanically Stable Ionogels for Soft Ionotronics

Burebi Yiming et al.

Summary: Novel hydrophobic ionogels with strong ionic liquid retention capability have been developed in this work, showing ambient and mechanical stability, resistance to moisture absorption in high humidity environments, and minimal loss of liquid components under prolonged mechanical loading. These ionogels exhibit desirable conductivity, large rupturing strain, moderate fractocohesive length, and a wide working temperature range. Furthermore, an ionic skin integrating sensory artificial skins and triboelectric nanogenerators has been designed, potentially paving the way for the development of soft ionotronics with stable performance.
