Site-Specific Electron-Driving Observations of CO2-to-CH4 Photoreduction on Co-Doped CeO2/Crystalline Carbon Nitride S-Scheme Heterojunctions

Lei Cheng et al.

Summary: This study reports a method of controlling directional charge transfer by embedding single-atomic Co into CeO2 catalyst to achieve selective CO2 photoreduction to CH4. The results show that Co embedded into CeO2 catalyst can accelerate the transfer of electrons from carbon nitride to specific Co sites, thereby promoting CH4 formation. This method achieves high yield and high turnover number of CH4 production without the need for any sacrificial agent.

S-Scheme 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/BiOI van der Waals heterojunction for CO2 photoreduction

Zhongliao Wang et al.

Summary: Reducing CO2 to hydrocarbon fuels through solar irradiation is a promising approach for mitigating CO2 emissions and resource depletion. However, the catalytic performance is hindered by severe charge recombination and high energy barrier. In this study, a 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/BiOI composite was fabricated to enhance CO2 photoreduction efficiency. The composite showed efficient charge transfer, strong redox capability, and effective charge separation. The intermediates of CO2 photoreduction were identified, and the rate-determining step for CH4 and CO production was determined to be CO2 hydrogenation. Introduction of Bi2MoO6 decreased the energy barrier for CO2 photoreduction on BiOI. The study highlights the synergistic effect of the S-scheme heterojunction and van der Waals heterojunction in the 2D/2D composite.

Libo Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite material was developed by in-situ deposition of few-layer graphene on the surface of ZnO, leading to enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. The improvement was attributed to the intimate interfacial contact and Schottky junction between ZnO and graphene, as well as the photothermal effect of graphene and pi-pi conjugation interaction with CO2 molecules. This work not only provides a feasible method for the in-situ growth of graphene, but also presents an efficient photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.
