Electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by carbon cloth anode for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Jingyi Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at a carbon cloth anode for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). It was found that higher PMS concentrations and current densities improved the degradation of SMX, with the presence of chloride ions enhancing degradation and humic acid inhibiting it. The degradation pathways were identified to include hydroxylation, cleavage of S-N bond, and oxidation of aniline group, with sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen contributing to SMX degradation in the system.

Role of halide ions on organic pollutants degradation by peroxygens-based advanced oxidation processes: A critical review

Ying Xue et al.

Summary: This review reconciles conflicting data on the degradation of pollutants in the presence of halides by peroxygens-based AOPs. Halide ions were found to affect contaminants' degradation either negatively or positively, depending on various factors such as substrate properties and operating parameters. Further research is needed to understand the effect of halides on the simultaneous removal of multiple organic pollutants. Better AOP technologies should be selected to minimize adverse effects and take advantage of positive effects in order to reduce operating costs and emissions in saline environments.
