Indole-functionalized cross-linked chitosan for effective uptake of uranium(vi) from aqueous solution

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel indole-modified cross-linked chitosan aerogel (IAA-CTSA) was successfully synthesized by grafting 3-indoleacetic acid onto chitosan and adding glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. The IAA-CTSA demonstrated powerful adsorption capacity for U(vi) at pH 6.5, reaching equilibrium within 6 hours. The maximum capture capacity for U(vi) was calculated to be 847.5 mg g(-1) based on the Langmuir model at 289 K. IAA-CTSA showed pH-dependent removal efficiency for U(vi), while the ionic strength had no significant impact. Moreover, IAA-CTSA maintained above 80% removal efficiency after 4 successive cycles. The study suggests that IAA-CTSA has great potential for wastewater remediation.
