O2 dosage as a descriptor of TWC performance under lean/rich dithering in stoichiometric natural gas engines

Jian Gong et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of oscillations in gas composition on the performance of a commercial Pd-based three-way catalyst for stoichiometric natural gas engines. The relationship between CH4 conversion and lambda change was explored, with the findings indicating that dynamic CH4 conversion is related to catalyst oxidation state. O-2 dosage was proposed as an effective descriptor of TWC dithering performance, and maps of dithering amplitude and O-2 dosage provide insights into optimal operation strategies for high CH4 and NO conversions.

Reaction pathways of methane abatement in Pd-Rh three-way catalyst in heavy duty applications: A combined approach based on exhaust analysis, model gas reactor and DRIFTS measurements

Moyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated methane abatement pathways in Pd/Rh three-way catalysts across three scales, highlighting the significant impact of rich-to-lean transitions on methane conversion rates, and suggesting that catalyst formulation and operation strategies should focus on stimulating methane steam reforming and maintaining catalyst activity towards steam reforming through targeted periodic rich/lean transitions.

Effect of Short Reducing Pulses on the Dynamic Structure, Activity, and Stability of Pd/Al2O3 for Wet Lean Methane Oxidation

Tanja Franken et al.

Summary: In this study, the activity of Pd/Al2O3 in wet lean CH4 oxidation was enhanced by applying repeated short reducing pulses (SRP), leading to a significant decrease in apparent activation energy compared to static operation. The degraded activity after thermal aging was also recovered by the same approach. Kinetic models showed that highly active PdOx species were formed and maintained during SRP operation, suggesting a practical range of Pd oxidation degree (25-65% Pd content) to preserve high CH4 conversion.
