High-specific-energy aqueous supercapacitor with extended operating potential using trichloroacetic acid electrolyte

Summary: Extending the operating potential of electrolytes is an efficient strategy to improve the energy density of aqueous supercapacitors. In this study, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is developed as an efficient acid electrolyte with extended operating potential to enhance the energy density of aqueous carbon-based supercapacitors. Additionally, hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) with a high specific surface area is prepared to match the TCA electrolyte. The experimental results demonstrate that the prepared HPC exhibits a high specific capacitance in the TCA electrolyte. The symmetric supercapacitor device based on the prepared HPC and TCA electrolyte shows excellent cycle durability and high energy density.
