Distribution of nutrients and phosphorus recovery in hydrothermal liquefaction of waste streams

Aisha Matayeva et al.

Summary: The hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of phosphorus (P) rich wastes is a promising technology for recovering P in solid form, especially as fertilizer. However, the bioavailability of P decreased to a low percentage and the heavy metal concentrations exceeded the threshold values for fertilizers. The reclamation of P as struvite was also calculated, and a significant percentage of P can be recovered.

Elemental migration and transformation during hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass

Jianwen Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) technology in various types of biomass, compares the biochemical composition and product distribution of biomass, and explores the transformation of organic and inorganic elements in biomass during the HTL process. The research findings contribute to the future industrialization of HTL and the upgrading of biocrude.

Wet oxidation of aqueous phase from hydrothermal liquefaction of sewage sludge

Lars Bjorn Silva Thomsen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the use of non-catalytic wet oxidation for treatment of post-hydrothermal liquefaction aqueous by-products to efficiently remove organic compounds and generate heat energy. Results show significant removal of COD and TOC at high temperatures and retention times in the aqueous phase from sewage sludge hydrothermal liquefaction, with minimum energy requirement achieved at 200 degrees C for 180 min.

Comparative Study on the Continuous Flow Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Various Wet-Waste Feedstock Types

Dylan Cronin et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising method for producing biocrude from wet feedstocks, which can be upgraded to fuels; however, the choice of feedstock significantly impacts product quality and process yield. This study investigated 13 different municipal wet-waste feedstocks, resulting in a significant volume of data.

Synergies during hydrothermal liquefaction of cow manure and wheat straw

Juliano Souza dos Passos et al.

Summary: Crop and animal residues produced by agribusiness are major waste streams globally, with wheat straw and cow manure being significant contributors. This study demonstrates that hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) can efficiently convert these materials into biocrude, and combining the processing of these feedstocks can greatly enhance biocrude production and carbon recovery.

Valorization of Byproducts from Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Sewage Sludge and Manure: the Development of a Struvite-Producing Unit for Nutrient Recovery

Ekaterina Ovsyannikova et al.

Summary: HTL technology is a promising method to recover energy from sewage sludge and manure, producing bio-crude oil. This study focuses on recovering phosphate and ammoniacal nitrogen by producing struvite from the byproducts of HTL. The air-agitated system tested in the laboratory showed potential for enhancing the quality of the product, making it suitable for fertilizer use.

Scaleable Hydrotreating of HTL Biocrude to Produce Fuel Blendstocks

Michael R. Thorson et al.

Summary: This study simulated the pore diffusion of hydrogen into the catalyst pores for the hydrotreating of HTL biocrudes and found that standard hydrotreating catalysts are pore diffusion limited for hydrogen diffusion in HTL biocrude upgrading. By running the reactor at different hydrotreater scales, the data quality was confirmed for scalable hydrotreating of HTL biocrudes.

Hydrothermal liquefaction aqueous phase treatment and hydrogen production using electro-oxidation

Aisha Matayeva et al.

Summary: This study investigates the simultaneous production of hydrogen and reduction of chemical oxygen demand by applying electro-oxidation to post-hydrothermal liquefaction aqueous phase treatment. The highest removal rates and hydrogen production rates were achieved at the highest current density, but positive energy return on investment can only be achieved at the lowest current density. The analysis shows that complex aromatic compounds are degraded first through the formation of organic acids with longer residence times and more severe current densities.

Pilot-scale hydrotreating of catalytic fast pyrolysis biocrudes: process performance and product analysis

Sylvain Verdier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrotreating of four chemically different biocrude feeds using a commercial hydrodeoxygenation catalyst, finding that aliphatic acids, ketones, aldehydes, and furan derivatives were completely converted while aromatics, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and phenolics increased. The oxygen content, nitrogen content, specific gravity, viscosity, and the heavy end of the boiling point range of the upgraded products increased with time on stream, with deactivation rate correlating with the total amount of oxygen in the feed (17 wt% to 29 wt%, wet basis).
