Manure combined with biochar reduces rhizosphere nitrification potential and amoA gene abundance of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms in acid purple soil

Jun Xie et al.

Summary: Fertilization and soil environmental factors play a role in the niche differentiation of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms and affect the ammonia-oxidation process. In this study, the effect of manure, chemical fertilizer, and manure combined with biochar on soil properties and the abundance, diversity, and structure of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the rhizosphere were investigated. The results showed that chemical fertilizer and manure combined with biochar increased the potential nitrification rate (PNR) and AOA amoA gene abundance, while manure combined with biochar decreased PNR and AOA amoA gene abundance. The population structure of AOA and AOB was influenced by pH, available phosphorus, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, soil moisture content, nitrate nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen in the rhizosphere. The ammonia oxidation process in the acid purple soil was dominated by AOA in the presence of chemical fertilizer and pig manure combined with rice husk biochar.

Recent advancements on the sustainable biochar based semiconducting materials for photocatalytic applications: A state of the art review

Palagiri Bhavani et al.

Summary: Researchers have highlighted the importance of renewable and sustainable energy production to address the increasing environmental pollution caused by non-renewable fossil fuels. Photocatalysis, converting abundant solar energy to solar fuels, has been proposed as an alternative solution. However, the low photocatalytic efficiency and high cost of existing catalysts have hindered commercialization. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop economically/eco-friendly, highly efficient, and robust catalysts. Introducing biochar as a support material in semiconductor-based catalysts can improve photocatalytic performance by addressing issues such as charge recombination, poor stability, and low conductivity. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of biochar-modified photocatalytic materials in applications such as hydrogen production, carbon dioxide photo-reduction, and water/air pollution treatment under solar light irradiation.

Biochar immobilized bacteria enhances nitrogen removal capability of tidal flow constructed wetlands

Lin Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the nitrogen removal capacity of tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) for saline wastewater treatment. Biochar produced from Cyperus alternifolius was utilized to adsorb and immobilize a salt tolerant aerobic denitrifying bacterium (Zobellella sp. A63), then added as a substrate into the TFCWs. The results showed that the TFCW with biochar immobilized bacteria (BIB) dosing system (TFCW3) achieved significantly higher removal rates of NO3--N and total nitrogen (TN) compared to the untreated system (TFCW1) and the biochar dosing system (TFCW2). This enhancement was mainly attributed to the presence of aerobic denitrifying bacteria, sulfate reducing bacteria, and sulfur-driven denitrifiers (DNSOB) which played vital roles in nitrogen removal. Furthermore, the addition of biochar bacterial agent significantly increased the abundance of genes involved in nitrogen removal. This study suggests that BIB is a feasible and effective amendment for TFCWs to improve the nitrogen removal capacity of saline wastewater.

The role of biochar in the photocatalytic treatment of a mixture of Cr(VI) and phenol pollutants: Biochar as a carrier for transferring and storing electrons

Ning Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photocatalytic activity of different types of biochar (BC) and TiO2/BC composite catalysts in the removal of phenol and Cr(VI). It is found that BC with a good structure and more active sites exhibits good photocatalytic activity. Coupling BC with TiO2 enhances the generation of photoexcited electrons and reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs. In addition, BC can store electrons under light and release them under dark conditions, facilitating the removal of pollutants. This study provides new insights into the role of biochar in photocatalysis.
