Abatement of Organic Contaminants by Mn(VII)/TEMPOs: Effects of TEMPOs Structure, Organic Contaminant Speciation, and Active Oxidizing Species

Honglong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, TEMPO-based redox mediators significantly accelerated the degradation of trace organic contaminants by Mn(VII), with the addition of substituents influencing the degradation kinetics. The degradation rate constants were affected by the pKa of the contaminants, with the highest values observed near the pKa value. The relative contributions of reactive species in the degradation process varied with pH and BPA speciation.

Toward Selective Oxidation of Contaminants in Aqueous Systems

Zhichao Yang et al.

Summary: The presence of diverse pollutants in water poses a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems globally. Chemical oxidation has been an effective technology for pollutant destruction, but faces challenges in treating emerging micro-pollutants. There are various examples of selective oxidation strategies in water treatment, but a systematic understanding of selectivity origins and rational catalyst design is still lacking.

Role of TEMPO in Enhancing Permanganate Oxidation toward Organic Contaminants

Honglong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that TEMPO, acting as an electron shuttle, significantly enhances the oxidation of organic contaminants by Mn(VII), especially for bisphenol A (BPA). Through a mechanism of rapid decomposition of TrOCs and self-regeneration, TEMPO accelerates the oxidation process by Mn(VII). In real waters, the Mn(VII)/TEMPO system shows promise for efficient removal of pollutants, with no adverse effects from ubiquitous cations/anions.

Reducing substances-enhanced degradation of pollutants by permanganate: The role of in situ formed colloidal MnO2

Bo Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the presence of aniline can significantly enhance the degradation rate of bisphenol A by permanganate, with the formation of colloidal MnO2 playing a key role in the oxidation process. The reactivity of MnO2 is pH sensitive, showing higher activity under acidic conditions, which explains the observed enhancement of aniline on BPA removal by permanganate at pH < 7.0.

Abiotic transformation and ecotoxicity change of sulfonamide antibiotics in environmental and water treatment processes: A critical review

Jingchen Li et al.

Summary: Sulfonamides are widely used antibiotics in human and animal healthcare, as well as in livestock agriculture, leading to concerns about their environmental fate and treatment technologies. The use of ·OH-based AOP has been proposed as an effective method to eliminate the toxicity of SA, although its selectivity is affected by water constituents. The future trend for SA treatment involves the use of biochar or metal-based oxidants in AOPs.
