A 20-Year Journey of Partial Nitritation and Anammox (PN/A): from Sidestream toward Mainstream

Zhiyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the progress of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) suppression in both the sidestream and mainstream partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) processes over the past two decades. It highlights the challenges in achieving stable NOB suppression in mainstream treatment and suggests the potential of a hybrid process and combination of strategies for efficient mainstream PN/A.

Insights into N2O turnovers under polyethylene terephthalate microplastics stress in mainstream biological nitrogen removal process

Yanying He et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to PET microplastics in wastewater reduces both N2O production and reduction during denitrification and nitrification processes, but overall N2O emission factors remain stable. Microplastics alter microbial activity pathways and N2O production pathways significantly under stress.

Selective Organic Carbon Enrichment Influences Nitrous Oxide Reduction by Denitrifiers: Electron Competition Insights

Yingrui Liu et al.

Summary: This study explored the effect of different organic carbon sources on the N2O reduction capacity of denitrifiers and investigated the influence of electron competition on N2O reduction. The results showed that denitrifiers enriched with abundant Nos genes from sodium acetate had the highest N2O reduction rate. However, the coexistence of multiple electron acceptors resulted in the susceptibility of N2O reduction for sodium acetate-enriched denitrifiers. Under sufficient organic carbon supply, Nos faced fierce electron competition from the upstream electron pool, leading to increased N2O accumulation.

Denitrification kinetics indicates nitrous oxide uptake is unaffected by electron competition in Accumulibacter

Samarpita Roy et al.

Summary: Denitrifying phosphorus removal is an energy-efficient treatment technology that relies on microorganisms like Accumulibacter utilizing nitrate or nitrite, but lack of complete denitrification pathways may lead to accumulation of harmful intermediates like nitrous oxide. Genomic analyses suggest that the denitrification abilities of Accumulibacter vary based on lineage. Accumulibacter did not accumulate N2O in the presence of multiple electron acceptors, and denitrification kinetics were not limited by electron competition.

Electron distribution in sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification under different electron donor and acceptor feeding schemes

Akashdeep Singh Oberoi et al.

Summary: Sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SdAD) is an effective alternative for treating water and wastewater streams with low organic carbon content. The distribution of electrons in the SdAD process is significantly influenced by the rate of sulfide loading, with competition intensifying among nitrogen oxide reductases. Sulfide was found to be a preferable electron donor compared to elemental sulfur, resulting in lower accumulation of denitrifying intermediates.

Electrostimulation enhanced ammonium removal during Fe(III) reduction coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) process

Ting-ting Zhu et al.

Summary: The study shows that microbial electricity coupled with Fe(III) reduction can enhance anaerobic ammonium removal, possibly through the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria and the generation of nitrite from the Feammox process. The synergistic effect of BES and Feammox process may improve the reaction process and microorganisms, leading to a more efficient ammonium removal process.

Estimation of countrywide N2O emissions from wastewater treatment in Switzerland using long-term monitoring data

Wenzel Gruber et al.

Summary: Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from wastewater treatment are significant but often underestimated. Long-term monitoring and emission factors can improve estimation accuracy. A countrywide emission factor can be calculated based on weighted factors from different WWTP categories. Better understanding of monitoring campaigns and data availability are crucial for accurate emission estimations.

Linking seasonal N2O emissions and nitrification failures to microbial dynamics in a SBR wastewater treatment plant

Wenzel Gruber et al.

Summary: This study reveals the correlation between nitrification failure, N2O peak emissions, poor settleability of activated sludge, turbid effluent, reduction in microbial community diversity, and shifts in community composition in a full-scale WWTP. The findings demonstrate that disturbances in the sludge microbiome affect key structural and functional microbial groups, leading to seasonal N2O emission patterns.

Denitrifying biofilm processes for wastewater treatment: developments and perspectives

Lan Wu et al.

Summary: Biofilms play a crucial role in denitrification processes due to their ability to retain microorganisms with diverse growth characteristics. Heterotrophic denitrification utilizes organic carbon as the main electron donor, while autotrophic denitrification and methane-supported denitrifying biofilms use reduced inorganic compounds and methane as electron donors, respectively. The review provides a comprehensive summary of the important denitrifying biofilm processes and discusses technical challenges, associated strategies, and potential for larger engineering scalability.
